I did open the drain bolt when I did ours, got maybe 1/4 cup of coolant out. If that. Won't bother next time.

Regarding the need for vacuum systems to expedite engine coolant change: I just followed the repair manual instruction, and even with some oversights on my part, muddled through in about an hour with no problems.

From what I've been reading, the Gen 2's use an insulated tank to store hot coolant and use that to warm the engine at cold start.

Gen 3's use water diverted from the heater return pipe and circulated around the exhaust pipe (controlled by a thermostat)instead of the hot coolant storage.

Generation 4 used the same exhaust preheater which became very problematic in leaking resulting in the very expensive replacement of the who unit including the catalytic converter.

Gen 5 dispensed with it altogether as reflected in this photo of the car's catalytic converter.
