    1) I find the seat belt warning tones on the Limited quite pleasant. Since the multi-info system takes so long to boot up and start the radio and maps, I push the start button as soon as I am seated. I then go through the pre-start tasks, such as buckling the seat belt and adjusting the A/C, so I hear the complete sequence of warning tones every time.

    2) I have plugged my Carista into my 2023, and it shows several changeable settings (including disabling the seat belt warning). Some of those obviously do not apply, but I have used it to enable opening all the windows with the key fob before entering the car. I've attached a copy of the Carista readout so that you can see what it claims to set.

Have you actually driven without the seatbelt? Try it just once. You'll understand. lol

The next mod really needs to be a "KITT" mod. In all seriousness, is there any explanation of how this works? Is it only providing 12V to a module that generates a sound, or is the 12V modulated to a dumb speaker? It would be awesome to make a module that made the KITT sound instead. The red light bar across the front would be an awesome bonus!

prior to gen 5, it was a speaker. but it's a complicated interconnected system that no one has been able to change the sound of.

How did you unfasten the "buttons" holding the grill cover under the hood?

    UPDATE: Figured it.

This particular mod simply removes the speaker from the circuit entirely, and replaces it with an appropriate resistor so that the dash doesn't show an alert about it. As others have reiterated, it's not really recommended that you completely disable the speaker in this fashion if you live in a pedestrian-rich environment, but if you're dead-set on doing so anyway, it's better than taking a knife to your speaker or damaging your amplifier.

Essentially, there are two components: the controller/amplifier, and the speaker.
The controller is some kind of combination microcontroller + amplifier. It has a connection to the CAN system, via which it presumably listens for signals indicating the current drive mode (so it knows when you're in Drive or Reverse) and speed (so it knows what level to play the sound), as well as signals related to door locking and whatnot. Based on these signals, it outputs the sound to the amplifier and then out to the speaker.

For customizing the sound, without touching the stock controller, you have to build your own. There are essentially two options:
    1) Tap into the CAN signals (pins 1 and 2 on the controller's main connector) to receive the same data as the stock unit. With this, you can do stuff like having different sounds for reverse vs forward drive modes, custom chimes for door locking/unlocking, and deciding how you want the sound to react to the current speed.
    2) Use an envelope follower circuit to read the amplifier output level from the stock controller, and use that level to control the volume of your own sound. This is a more basic version that is potentially less error-prone but also less capable. You won't have any of the CAN data, so you won't be able to really customize the speed curve, nor will you have direct access to information about drive mode, speed, and doors. If you're clever, and your MCU/ADC is good enough, you can observe the rate of attack of the sound to tell if it's the instant max-volume shape of the reversing sound versus the gradual rise of the forward gear sound, and perhaps even tell the door chime apart from the other sounds if their envelope profile is distinct enough.

I've been working with a couple different MCUs to see what their audio-playing capabilities are like, and have successfully managed to play mp3s from an SD card to the speaker via my own hardware, but I intend on trying out some more advanced capabilities, so it might be a while yet. I've got some more stuff on order that I'm going to try out.

oh? The speaker also produces the door chime? Did not understand that until now.

Yep, I actually wanted to make a note of it in my original post but the edit window was already up by the time I remembered. I can't recall whether the annoying "hey you left something in the back" beeps are also made by this speaker, though.

    It isn’t required by law.
If it were required by law, I’m guessing it wouldn’t have an off feature either.

In my gen2 i just disconnected the speaker.

In my gen 3 i got a little more creative and sourced an oem button that plugged in next to the air ventilation button (i had the solar option and fan ventilation) where i had it hooked up to the speaker allowing me to leave it disabled by default and activate it if i rolled up on someone in the parkinglot. Total custom wiring to break or enable the circuit.

gen 4 got interesting because disconnecting the speaker is where you got the warning light on the dash AND heads up display so making a bypass like in this thread was the option.

gen 5 seems like even more of a pia linking the lock unlock chirp and reverse beeping to it. Just going to say if you have a bypass from a gen 4, it does plug into a gen 5 so you dont need to rebuild.

Work on the "stage two" of this project has continued bit by bit in the meantime. Have had success passing audio from an SD card to the speaker via a microcontroller and I2S amplifier. All that's left is to hook into the CAN bus to listen in on the speed/door/reverse signals, and respond to them appropriately (and maybe try hooking up a microphone with push-to-talk for good measure). Then I'll design a custom PCB to reduce the size of it all, make a 3d print for the section of the dash where I plan on installing the controls, and find an appropriate engine sound. It'll be really entertaining if I can even make the engine noise increase in pitch/intensity as you "rev" it.

Has been a pretty fun little project, though I'm not really looking forward to the wiring job I'll have to do to get it all integrated into the car.

When you have the plug and play mod count me in as a customer
I’ll take my chances with the possibility of running over someone
    The noise is very annoying

Not nearly as annoying as a court summons if some enterprising lawyer finds this post after you squish somebody's kid in a parking lot!

(Although you're right! It is an annoying sound!)

When I took delivery of my 2023 Prius XLE I was really upset by the noise. I saw on you tube where the speaker was and I removed mine and wrapped it in Saran Wrap and bought 3 pounds of molding clay from Amazon to put around the speaker. I molded about 1/2 inch of it around the speaker. Then I wrapped black heavy duty duct tape around the clay. Put it back in and it made a big difference. In reverse there is a very slight NOISE but forward nice and quiet. I refuse to have to pay big $$$$ for such a stupid thing to do to a car that is supposed to be silent.

I think it's funny how people say the car is *supposed* to be silent conveniently ignoring that the engineers and manufacturers of said silent car made the conscious decision to make it, in fact, not silent.

I get that the sound they chose can be a bit annoying at first. But honestly, it's better than being hit by someone. I've definitely heard the noise from other Toyota's in parking lots as I'm walking and realizing "oh I should be extra careful because that car could pull out". Same for other cars.

It could be argued that using sensors to determine if you're in the middle of nowhere and modulate the volume could be good. But it's clearly not designed nor intended to be silent

Job security for slip and fall lawyers......

If I were you I would immediately restore the car to stock condition!
....OR.... I would get a mod to remove your posts from this thread - and then I would modify the noise maker as people have done in threads like this:
Disabling the prius prime noise maker. | PriusChat

What I would do rather than use liquid tape would be to buy the same kind of connector that your speaker has, and then solder the resistor to THAT and plug it back into the car. I'd also protect the original, unmodified speaker's connector with a zip ited baggie corner.
If you squish a pedestrian you will be able to return your car to stock (legal) in about thirty seconds without having to worry about somebody discovering pounds of heavy duty duct tape, Saran Wrap, modeling clay, etc....etc.....
It would be the first thing I would look for!
NOBODY hates the fact that our government is trying to defeat the beneficial effect of Darwinism more than ME.
If I get another Prius I will probably just leave that part of the car alone even though I ALWAYS KEEP MY HEAD ON A SWIVEL in a parking lot whether walking or driving.
I drive a company car quite often and I've learned to avoid parking lots when I can, otherwise parking as far away from the entrance as possible in a clear area. We've had more than one occurrence of people intentionally bouncing themselves off of our vehicles because there is the false expectation that the company will write them a check.
