    1. I changed the battery. Twice.
    2. I fiddled with the Key button under the steering wheel. No luck.
    3. The fob buttons work. But....

It used to open the driver side doorlock when I neared the door. That stopped. Also, now I must insert the fob into the slot in order for the ignition to close its circuit and start the car. so basically it no longer senses the proximity of the fob.

I have two fobs and both stopped working in this sense.

Last week I put in a new stereo. I checked the harness behind the Key button and it's intact.

Any thoughts how to rectify this?

The SKS key computer is right behind your display that shows your miles per hour and your transmission and your gas tank That's the computer that runs the silver back remote logo SKS system that allows the remote to stay in your pocket and you to open the door drive the car just by walking up to it The button underneath the steering wheel if it is pushed in disables SKS and you must manually push the button to unlock the car and insert the remote into the slot to start and drive the car or ready the car That's correct when that button is out SKS proximity sensing should be working but. If you start away from the car 15 ft when you push any of the buttons on the remote do you see the red light light up on the remote it's very small and very faint look carefully yes or no will do.? If yes then the remote is trying to send out a signal to the car and vice versa so then if you walk up to the car not knowing where the switch under the steering wheel is I can't see from here if you walk up to the car if you push the button to lock or unlock the door it should work because the light was working on the remote.? If not then you need TIS or a good locksmith to be troubleshooting the remote unlocking system and the SKS system. Have you changed remote cases like the plastic part with the rubber buttons it gets all deteriorated have you opened those move the green board and the transponder chip to a new case? Did you forget the transponder chip possibly It's a little trapezoidal shape thing and the bottom of the remote? There's lots to troubleshoot and go on here so.

    That tells us nothing.

If the button is in you've disabled the SKS.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful reply.

First thing I learned: for the remote Key button under the steering wheel to work, the ignition must be ON. This is N O T in the owner's manual.

Then, after much poking around, I have determined that the problems are:

    1. The remote sensor switch in the passenger door is not working.

    2. the problems with the second key (which I bought on eBay) are due to Toyota's evil SKS de$ign. I wasted $75 on a locksmith today who couldn't reprogram it to do remote entry of doors, though it does ignition and door sensing.

The door remote sensor switch (1 above) became non-operational last week when I was installing new speakers in the door and was mucking around with the wiring. I will put up another post asking where and how those things are supposed to work. Any thughts are most welcome! thanks again.

So what has happened have you cut into the wires of the remote door sensor in the passenger side or what's happened?

This is not the case. What makes you say that? I have disabled the SKS while the car is OFF often and have had no problems doing that.
Too much of a coincidence? I would be inspecting the wiring at all the places I worked if I had such a coincidence.
