Leaving work yesterday when the temps were reading 101* I drove away with a “Check Engine” light on the dash. I got home and had it checked. The code was P0505. I went to and back from work today with the light still on. My wife and I went to see a movie and when I started the car and drove away ... NO MORE LIGHT.

Should I be happy or worried?!?

Probably be happy for now but monitor.

    Information about that code.

P0505 | Idle Control System Malfunction

    MONITOR DESCRIPTION

The idle speed is controlled by the Electronic Throttle Control System (ETCS).

The ETCS is composed of the throttle motor which operates the throttle valve, and the throttle position sensor which detects the opening angle of the throttle valve.

The ECM controls the throttle motor to provide the proper throttle valve opening angle to obtain the target idle speed.

The ECM regulates the idle speed by opening and closing the throttle valve using the ETCS. If the actual idle RPM varies more than a specified amount or a learned value of the idle speed control remains at the maximum or minimum five times or more during a trip, the ECM concludes that there is a problem in the idle speed control ECM function. The ECM will turn on the MIL and a DTC is set.

    Example:
If the actual idle RPM varies from the target idle RPM by more than 200 (*1) rpm five times during a drive cycle, the ECM will turn on the MIL, and a DTC is set.

    HINT:
*1: RPM threshold varies depending on engine loads.

    Troubleshooting steps are reasonably straightforward.

    1. CHECK OTHER DTC OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0505)
    • If any other codes besides P0505 are output, perform troubleshooting for those DTCs first.
    • If only P0505 go to step 2
    2. CHECK CONNECTION OF PCV HOSE
    • If there is damage repair or replace the PCV hose.
    • If the PCV hose is connected correctly and has no damage, go to step 3
    3. CHECK THE AIR INDUCTION SYSTEM
    • If leaks are found repair or replace the air induction system
    • If no leakage is found in the air induction system, check the electric throttle control system.

What was the movie, in case someone else has the same problem?

THANKS dolj. I was aware of what the code was and I looked up how to fix it. Your explanation was so much better. A guy I talked to at the auto-parts store kinda thought that the 100* and 101* days back to back could have given the system an attitude. All things being equal for the cost of $8 otd. for a new PCV hose and valve I replaced them for GP (general principles).

The movie was “BARBIE”. I was pretty much forced to go. The first half-hour made me just wanna puke. After that I wanted to boink Barbie. As it turns out she is actually a miserable punk tease bitch. She won’t let Ken kiss her. How the how can there be a “Knocked-Up” Barbie if she won’t even let Ken kiss her. Ken is although pretty much a sissy. On top of that ... there is a scene where a bunch of construction guys hit up on her. She tells them that she doesn’t have a vagina and Ken doesn’t have a penis. It is rated PG-13.
