Can you charge it and does it have any issues? If no issues and charging is fine, then run with it for now. If your VIN number is part of the TSB, then yeah I'm going to guess sooner or later it's going to error out (see below). When it does, take it to whichever toyota service department you want. Bottom line, it's a warranty job and they're getting paid by Toyota Corporate for it. They'll get it done.

Just my 2 bits of course ;)

    Important Verbage:
    Meaning:
In other words, Check Engine light is ON and the code reported is P1CE996.

    Cheers!

    Thanks for the reply.

Yes after I received the message (from a public charger I had never used before) I took it home and the car charged normall like it always does from empty to full. No issues. Drove using the charge and got the same mileage I always do in EV mode, before dropping the car off with them.

I did my research on the issue before I took it in. I explained everything you said above to the service advisor and kindly asked him to simply clear the code and order the part and I would come back. He said no and said I cannot drive the car. I was kinda shocked, and should have went with my gut instinct and asked for my keys.

The whole dealership is shady. Its a PENSKE automotive group dealer. There isnt a single car in the showroom. While waiting 2 hours for them to check the code, I was talking to other customer and listening what they were charging other people. $189USD for a tire rotation and oil change on a 2021 camry? Seriously?

Yelp 2 star rating, google 5 star rating. Something not adding up here.

Was talking to one of their sales people and they have not received a single 2023 Prius and he didn't even look surprised. Service advisor admitted they have never seen a 2023 Prius and that the tech never has worked on a 2023 Prius. Talk about confidence inspiring.

I don’t blame you for distrusting them. Why not call multiple Toyota service depts and ask them what they recommend?

When I had a controversial warranty issue with my Gen 2 years ago, I called several of the most reputable dealerships in my region (CARB states) and asked them how they were dealing with it. Two of them provided me with written documentation stating they fixed their customers’ cars with the exact same issue and processed it under warranty. I fought with Toyota corporate for months and they finally gave in and reimbursed me for the repair.

You do know that you can go to any Toyota dealership to deal with this, right? I get that the issue is finding a dealership that isn’t too far away and can get the part. I wouldn’t let them touch my car unless there are zero options.

My bad, you were the one with the rental from the service department, right? They've initiated the work order and gotten you into a rental (which toyota is paying for). Just rock the rental and once this is over and done, find yourself another dealership/service department for future needs.(y)

I suppose you can tell them to :mad:off and you want to go somewhere else but you might end up having to eat the rental car cost.

Yeah when I saw all my doors unlocked at 10PM that was it, I made the decision I need to go back tomorrow after I speak to other dealers in the area. These guys were closest to me and thought I would give them a shot. My gut told me in the first 30 minutes I shouldn't have stayed.

I would rather drive an hour to somewhere small and personable than sit in a lineup of 100 cars like I'm in a Chik Filet drive through.

Exactly. Sounds like a plan. I’m fortunate my local dealership is somewhat small. Not perfect but better than most.

They sent me to a Hertz for the rental. I'll deal with them separately. The Hertz guy was actually the most reasonable person I spoke to today.

My dealership said they are required to provide rental with new car issues like this. Not sure if that is a Toyota thing or not.

Same error on my brand new Prius. Dealer erased the error code. Then came back. It has sometimes do with the cooling during charging. They asked me to come in for longer diagnostics. But then message disappeared on its own for two months. Now it’s back but everything seems to be operating fine. I highly suspect a wrong code.

There is nothing to diagnose. Toyota is aware of the issue. It's a malfunctioning temp sensor in the charging unit cooling system (fan). On Aug 7 Toyota released a fix under warranty to replace the faulty part. It's about a $1.5kUSD part, but its all under warranty.

I also had them clear the error a few days ago when I got it for the first time. I have not attempted to charge since. You are saying that the errore only came back for you when you were charging, but possible only when it was charging in hot ambient temperature?

The error constantly forcing itself onto the screen is quite annoying, so id rather not so anything to cause it to come back.

Day 4 of ownership and had this issue. Plugged in 5 times total. Last time I plugged in it was in a hot garage. So, the TSB with the temp sensor seems like the culprit. Have an appointment with the dealer Thursday. I will let them know about the TSB and see what they say.

I had mine fixed last week. No issues so far. They said it might be 3 weeks to get it done but ended up calling me back in a week.

Hi…I’m taking delivery of a Prime SE in a few days. Its VIN is within the 7700s. Can I be certain that the battery charging issue was fully resolved in all Primes that were produced after VIN 6100 (approximately)? I’d rather not take delivery of the Prime if it will be a cause of aggravation! Thx in advance.

You likely won't run into the issue unless you charge it in very hot conditions. Call them and have them order the replacement part and you should be able to get it resolved in a week or two.

I live mostly in the Desert of So Ca. Typically, it’s 115 degrees in the summer months! So….I’m a very likely candidate for the charging issue….unless…the issue has been corrected at the factory for those Primes with a VIN above 6,100 (approximately). Have any of very recent buyers had the charging issue? Or has it been limited to the early adopters? Separately, as an FYI, I had owned a 2021 Prius Prime…charged it overnight, daily. Never had a single issue. I bought the 2023 Prime under the assumption of similar reliability.

I think you might be misunderstanding this TSB. The car charges normally. Everything works fine. I even fully charged the car with the error on the screen. It operated normally. It's just a wonky sensor, that's it. The car thinks there is a problem, but there isn't. I wouldn't have any doubts taking delivery. Just have them order the part if it hasn't been done.

I don't think that's been established - the error code indicates a fan fault, but I've not seen anything conclusive about whether the fan is faulty or just the speed sensor. (I'm not sure where the idea it was a temperature sensor came from.)

Just because it lets you charge with a reported fan fault doesn't mean it's a false error. I'm sure there's a second level of temperature monitoring, so it likely lets you carry on until there's actually a high temperature readout.

Are all of the Primes effected? Or is it a crap shoot? I’m not very willing to buy into such issues at this late stage in my life. Sorry.
