With all the new tech in the new priuses, is there a way to locate them if they are stolen? (Assuming LE trim)

If so, does that mean these priuses are less likely to be stolen than other cars?

The Toyota app would be able to help you find it. How did it get stolen?

Well it didn't help that Toyota had to stop production completely a few days ago.

Well Safety Connect is "free" for 10 years, but it only works if you have 4G cellular, and that's $15/mo to AT&T.

Where are you getting that from?

I can only assume you're misinterpreting the section about "4G network dependent". That means there has to be some type of 4G cell network available for the service to work. Whether you pay for Wi-Fi Connect(the AT&T service) doesn't matter; it's only whether the car's in range of a 4G tower.

I agree with Hammersmith. However, it's unclear if any 4G network will do, or if it's only AT&T. So, if the 4G network used is unavailable, you won't be able to connect to Safety Connect from the car, and tracking capabilities will be dead until the car is again in an area where the network is again available. But, the only Toyota Connected Service that requires the separate AT&T WiFi Connect package is Integrated Streaming (which is redundant if you can use CarPlay or Andriod Auto).

Ah you are correct, I was misinterpreting the 4G dependency. Looked more closely and the AT&T subscription isn't required.

Yes. I recall a new owner, a long time ago, signing up for Safety Connect a few hours after his car was stolen, and successfully locating it. (One fob had been left into another family vehicle parked next to it. When a thief broke into that vehicle overnight and discovered the fob, he quickly learned that the fob belonged to the adjacent Prius.)
I highly doubt that could work before customer delivery. It certainly won't work during ocean transit, out of range of any cellular towers. I'm not confidant that the factory default settings would work in Japan either, beyond range of the factory's test systems.

There are also numerous places in North America without mobile coverage.

That's weird- I didn't opt for Connect, but have the app, and it still shows me all the bells/whistles of where my car is and Start/Stop, Lights, Air Con, Hazards, Unlock/Lock, etc. All I had to do is download and update the Toyota app on my Android.

No fee to AT&T needed. See messages 7 and 8 above.

For me, the connect is a novelty- since I have the LE, and I need to open all doors at the same time, I cannot even use the 'unlock' feature of touching the door handle, because it only opens the driver's door. I reprogrammed the settings to have all doors open including the hatch when hitting the remote open, and it works just fine. Bells and whistles- I guess I'm still a bit old school. Connect is cool, though; I was at a restaurant turning on and off my headlights to see if anyone noticed. No one did except us.
