2010 popping sound when accelerating

    Recently have been getting a popping sound when accelerating from a DEAD stop. Rolling stops do not make this sound. It is not every stop but very concerning. During a recent errand I encountered at least 10 traffic signal stops and it popped with each one. Parked the car for a couple of hours and this same trip coming home it did not pop at all. This happens whether the ICE is cold or hot. I can not make it happen it is completely unpredictable. Almost sounds like it is backfiring through the carburetor. At times the 'pop' is louder than others. I have an appointment next week at the dealer, any ideas what to expect?

    does it only happen when the engine comes on?

    how many miles on her?

    has the egr circuit been cleaned?

    It happens whether or not the engine is running...just when I accelerate normally from a complete stop.
    About 130,000 miles on it.
    I don't know what the 'egr' circuit is but I have taken it in to the dealers EVERY 5000 miles since it was purchased new.

    so it ismorelikely in a wheel/brake/bearing/cvj than under the hood i'm thinking. maybe a sticky caliper or bad cv joint.

    just an fyi, the egr circuit is not on toyotas radar, or their dealers. the poorly designed rings allow hydrocarbons to blow by into the throttle body, egr valve and cooler, and the intake manifold ports.
    clogging of this system can lead to a blown head gasket, but it doesn't happen to everybody for some reason.
    if you don't diy, it's about $1,000. in labor to have someone clean it all up

    Thanks for the FYI. I sure hope its not egr circuit then! I'll try to post back next Monday after the service appointment if they manage to find the problem and hopefully fix it. I already know that it will start at $175 for the diagnostic. But since there have not been any indicator lights on the dash, I doubt if they will find anything that way.

    Please let us know the location of where the sound is coming from and if you aren't sure have someone else drive on an empty road while you climb around inside the car searching for more info.

    Also, see if you can create the sound by revving the engine when the car is in park.

    The sound is definitely coming from the front of the car. When it first started, I thought it was coming from the driver's side front wheel. But the more it happened, my wife thought it came from the engine compartment, hence the remark in the first post about backfiring through the carb. It will ONLY make this noise while accelerating from a stop. It will not do this by revving the engine--I tried. Again, this is intermittent. I can drive 50 miles and it won't do it or I can drive 10 miles and it will do it several times. Extremely worrisome and frustrating.

    it can't be the egr because the engine has to be running. could be suspension related, maybe even the inverter, idk.

    As I mentioned above, I would respond with the 'official' diagnosis from the dealership. According to their testing and examination, the front strut on the passenger side is worn out/failed. They recommended replacing both front struts and the parts have been ordered. I personally am not 100% sure of this but I am completely ignorant when it comes to these matters. I have faith in this dealership so I will go with it and hopefully it will solve the problem. Thanks to all who responded to my question.

    I would get on this:
    The best (and MUCH cheaper) method is DIY. See first two links in my signature (on a phone turn it landscape to see signature).

    Optimum would be to full clean the EGR components (including intake manifold) every 50K miles. Minimum is 100K for first, 50K therafter. At 130K you're in head gasket failure territory.
