When checking the engine and inverter coolant levels, I feel like I'm missing out on something, because everyone describes it as extremely simple (or doesn't even talk about how to do it), but I find it really hard to determine where the level is.

When looking at the sides of the tanks, I can clearly see the low and full marks on the sides of the tanks. I can vaguely see that the top of the tank is a different color from the bottom of the tank, but I absolutely cannot see a clear line between the coolant and the empty space above it. On the engine coolant tank, there is a fat lip in the tank right where I would want to check the level, which also projects shadows internally. On the inverter coolant tank, there are like multiple internal compartments with shelves between them, again making it hard to tell what is a line of the tank vs a shadow vs the coolant.

I have tried shining flashlights through the tanks, but it doesn't really help.

Am I crazy? Also I am red-green colorblind, is that what is making it hard for me?

measure the distance from the full mark to the top of the tank, transfer that measure to something that you can use as a dip stick that you can see as wet, maybe a piece of cardboard etc. the coolant is pink so you might not be able to see it.
post a pic of the fluid level maybe we can help out.

Maybe it is a factor. Try a crazy bright flashlight.

However, the level doesn't have to be exact, just keep it "where you can see it" - ie something in the inverter reservoir; something in the radiator + the "surge" tank.

I did consider this for the engine coolant, but the inverter coolant is not visible below the cap:

That last image perfectly captures my struggle. I can't see any clear boundary between the color on top and on bottom:

I think maybe the crazy bright flashlight is what I am missing. Here's what it looks like to me:

Now that I can compare to your images, I think that I can see the line on the inverter coolant tank, my level is just high, and I thought I was just looking at the plastic ledge that you can see when you look down from the cap.

Also a top down view of the engine coolant tank. This is what made me sure that my level wasn't *too* low.

Not easy to see, but that's the line:

Sorry I wasn't clear. I can see the FULL and LOW lines, I just can't see the fluid line.

That inverter reservoir has some internal baffles, bit of waterfall action; that can be why the line might not always appear one level all the way across. If it's not up to the FULL mark back where the FULL mark is, it's not full.
