Hate to write this up as I suspect it will turn out to be a simple answer that I shouldn't have missed but here goes: Have had my new 2007 Prius for 3 weeks now. In the first week, while exploring the car functions, on two or three ocassions I was able to push the voice command button on the steering wheel and have the car dial phone numbers. Now, as I've read the manual and the unofficial owner's guide and learned there there are other voice command functions, I've tried to use it and get no response at all when I push the button. What stupid thing did I do to disable it or what else am I missing? I spent some time looking around the forum topics but did not find an answer . . . Thanks for your patience w/ this newbie.

Trust me, that's not a trivial question. In fact, the Prius doesn't come with a list of voice commands - at least it didn't in '04 when I got Priapus. Someone - I can't remember who - actually went through the MFD "help" screens and wrote down all the possible commands for each situation. If not for that, I wouldn't be able to provide the list I've attached.

Now, about "nothing happens", I can't speak to that since I don't know the whole situation. There have been times when I've used a command (Like "home") and was not on the MAP screen. In this situation, Priapus reminds me that "this command is available only in the Map screen." So even when I screw up, he lets me know.

If you have an '07, isn't there something that you have to tap an on-screen button or something before speaking? Could that be it?

I've seen that and one other list of voice commands, however I have not yet seen a list specifically for the '06+. The said lists are specifically for the '04-'05 because I noticed they have the "Tape" command, which the '06 doesn't have the cassette, and the commands for address and dial are specific to the '06+ and are not listed. I was wondering what other new commands there may be that I haven't used yet, but I guess I'll have to go through the help screen and write them all down like you said, unless someone knows of an existing list of commands for '06+? The '07 should be the same as the '06, you just press the voice button on the steering wheel and wait for the "beep" (or you may have the default setting where it tells you wait for the beep which can be disabled in the options) then you say the command. If it does not recognize the command or didn't hear you, it will ask you to press the button and try again, or if that option is not availbe in the screen you are in it will tell you so.

I have compiled a list specific for 2006.

    :) Hi count on mike

NICE PIECE OF WORK - Thanks for the Verbal Command List.

...Now... If only I can get Ernestine2 (My '07 TE Prius) to respond more accurately. You see, I have named my 2004 AND 2007 Prius "Ernestine" after Lili Tomlin's telephone operator character from Laugh In years ago. Sometimes, she will produce totally unrelated responses to my verbal request. If I say "Go Home" she may say "Showing Post Office Icons" Rather than being upset, I usually view it as entertainment.

Do you know that you can cancel a voice action by pressing the steering wheel voice button before "Ernestine2" finishes telling you what it is going to do? If you say "Go Home" and it starts telling you "Showing Post Office Icons," it doesn't really show the icons until after the word "Icons." If you hit the voice button before Ernestine2 finishes and say something like "Map", you don't have to undo the Post Office Icons.

The other nuance I haven't seen mentioned on PriusChat is that switching from Reverse to Drive cancels voice recognition. I would start up my car, back out of a parking space and say "70 degrees." As it's repeating my command back to me, I would switch into Drive and voice recognition would be cancelled.

    Mike

HELP!!! I must disable the "wait for the beep to enter the voice command message" or whatever the lady says. I just want it to "beep" when I press the button. How do I set the default setting in "options"?

    thanks!!!!

Press the "Map/Voice" button to the right of the screen, press "I agree", press "Menu" to the right of the screen, press "Setup", press the down arrow to access page 2/3, look for the option that says "Voice Recognition Guidance" and select "OFF"

Here is a demo, it will teach you about a lot of interesting features you probably didn't know about. Click on the link, click on "How To" tab and click on "Advanced System Setup" and it will give you a demo on your issue.

The demo is interesting and long!!! I am part way through it and will continue after lunch. Unfortunately, it seems that my option is to "turn voice guidance off" which is absolutely NOT what I want to do. What I want to do is turn off the initial prompt for speech recognition -- the thing that says "wait for the beep and then speak a command" and then it beeps. I just want it to beep then. I don't think I'm going to find a way to do that without turning off ALL voice prompts, but I'll go through the rest of the tutorial and see if it helps.

    thanks

I was mistaken. Turning off "voice guidance" doesn't turn off voice guidance, it only turns off the stupid beep prompt which is exactly what I wanted. THANKS

Is there a voice command (easy way to) MUTE the voice guidance during a navigation? Something better than finding the screen to lower her voice and setting it at the lowest setting....?

Here's Mike's 2006 voice command list as a pdf file, for those without Microsoft Word.

I set "Voice Guidance in All Modes" to "OFF" which means you will not hear the turn by turn directions unless you are on the "MAP" screen. If I want to listen to her I go to the map. If I don't want to listen to her, I just simply switch to a different screen by pressing the "INFO" button on the steering wheel and she shuts up (although I think she will finish what she is saying). Try going over all the options in the Setup menu and if you don't know what one of them does then do a search on PriusChat or Google or even look through the owners manual.
