Tie Rod Castle Nut

    I'm looking to replace my tie rod castle nut. I believe it is part number 90171-12014. The local dealer does not have one available and I was hoping to order one off Amazon for quicker delivery. Does anyone know the size of the castle nut or a link to a suitable replacement? TIA!

    I got a bunch of them laying around here I could send you one I guess 14 mm wrench on does it so what's that make it usually 8 mm by maybe 1.25.

    Anyway whatever size it is I have tons of them laying here I change them all the time and they all come with new nuts so the old ones are just laying here.

    A 14mm hex according to J.I.S. (Japan Industrial Standards) means that the thread is M10x1.25. A large industrial supplier would likely have one.

    The nut is still good, I just broke the tabs on the top which hold the spring pin. I guess I could use a cotter pin temporarily until I get a replacement.

    No man once you blast that on with your air wrench if you were to put a little loctite red on it smash it down with your impact not kill it and ruin the nut but just run it down at most of mine are missing the pins I've got cars here that are 18 years old that haven't had a cotter pin and a tie rod in joints for 12 years or better I wish they would come undone No just kidding. But not a likely event and just carry the one over to advance Auto they'll probably have one on a packaged ball joint that they'll just give you. Go to any shop as close to you as you can that does wheel and tire work I'm sure you'll find several on the floor when you buy a new tie rod or a ball joint it comes with a new castle head nut in the pin The old ones usually go on the floor.

    Yep just put a little loctite red or the high strength loctite of your flavor run it on there torque it if you're that kind of person let it dry about an hour and then let it rip that thing will never come undone and fall out of there I can about guarantee it you'll be long gone and way of the car before that even ever thinks about becoming an issue.

    Hard to judge from the pic, but it seems to be all the little nubs at the top got knocked off. Cotter pin tapped down firmly against a face would still hold I think. Dealer may not have but they can always order them in?

    Correct on both fronts. The nut wouldn't thread upside down, so I knocked out the tie rod with the nut on to protect the threads and ruined the top of the castle nut. Local shops don't carry it and the dealer would need to order it. So I'm going to order one and make do until it comes in.

    When you remove the tie rod you loosen the nut and then you smack the mounting point on the hub with an aluminum medium weight hammer that will knock the tapered pin of the ball joint end right out of the hub You do not smack on the top of the nut on top of the threads you can damage the threads and then the mess won't tighten up it'll just spin You never want to smack the nut in the threads together. They make a tie rod pulling tool It's a cheap thing anybody can own but there's no need You can watch videos on this online No you're not going to break the mount off the hub You're not trying to kill the damn thing The shock releases the tapered shaft and it just drops If you leave the nut on it'll drop down and then you just unscrew the nut and lay it down gently or you can let it slam into the floor however you like to work.
