Service light came on. Turned it off and changed oil (Castrol Magnateck) and filter (OEM). Put in 3 quarts, turned car on put it in reverse and then when I put it in drive I see two red bars and the red triangle of death and some odd knocking/clicking sound which seems t be coming from the right (passenger) side of the engine.

Noticed the the engine was charging the battery so I let it run in park and it stopped running. Topped off w/ half a quart more, turned it on again, and the same thing happened but I think it became blue this time.

Turned it on a third time and took it for a drive and battery filled to one bar away from full and blue. Was the third time the charm aka a one off OR is this a warning of bad things to come??

You need to get a comparable scan tool that will at least read basic p codes that'll get you started possibly You need to check your 12 volt just to make sure you actually have a good functioning 12 volt battery then if the car starts and readys take it for a reasonable drive I see you're in LA so you got to get somewhere where you can really drive not sit in traffic with the air conditioning running that's not considered driving in this car. It's that time of year where maybe you can crack the windows not run the air conditioner and get the car somewhere where it's flat and running a bit not a hundred miles an hour about 55 60 and you want to see how quickly you move from magenta to blue to green and back to magenta in minutes what does it take to go through that cycle and repeat and go through that cycle and repeat and go through that cycle??? 9 minutes 12 minutes something like that your battery is struggling. The next thing to do is open up the trunk and have a look at the battery under its cover the gray thing you'll see a lot of green and corrosion on all the nuts and bus bars under the black plastic covers You don't want to be doing this unless you know how to disconnect the battery safety plug and be safe 211 or so volts of DC power is enough to take you away from here and then you won't need to worry with a car. Beware

Took it for a long drive in the freeway and now drove to work and everything seems normal. Hasn’t turned purple yet and I try to drive in a way that keeps the hybrid battery level at least half but not completely full bc I heard that’s bad too.

Hopefully everything is okay and I will update if it turns purple again.

12 volt was tested recently and the health was ok but the tester showed that the battery is like 500 cold cranking amps but was only at like 200 cold cranking amps so it might be on its way out but I don’t know how that would affect the hybrid battery. If I have a bad 12V the car won’t start. Battery is OEM Panasonic.
