Defer to gas gauge "pips" or odometer?

I average about 50 MPG in my 2007 Prius. Generally, about 370 miles into a full tank the gas gauge shows one or two "pips" left. I believe that the gas tank bladder should hold 10 gallons, and I have pushed it to 500 miles on a tank of gas, but for the last few hundred miles the final "pip" on the gas gauge was flashing.

Should I fill up when the gas gauge suggests I should (when there are one or two "pips" left) or should I fill up when the odometer suggests I have used most of the gas in the tank based on MPG?

Me personally I fill up when the tank is empty almost the fumes I'm checking this by mileage I don't really care about the gas gauge personally. When I fill up I fill up very quickly to 8 gallons and then much slower all the way up to right around 10.1 at this point and the gurgling starts then I'm not pumping and I let that settle and I keep topping off the tank I'm trying to stretch my bladder back into shape like it was when new I guess and it's pretty much worked now I can pump full speed almost to 9 gallons when it's completely empty when I first got the car I couldn't pump on full blast but to about 3 gallons and then slowly I have stretched the bladder out to about where I think it was basically when it was like factory. Then it's worked pretty well

it depend on how much you can get in. if you can put in 10 gallons, i would be comfortable with about 450 miles. i wouldn't trust the gauge because of the bladder

I don't worry about it, choosing an "either-or" approach to filling it up. When it's convenient I fill up shortly after the tank hits 300 miles or the "guess gauge" hits 2 pips. I realize that's too early for many of you but it sure has worked for us. We don't have a commute any more and on the open highway we're looking for restrooms between 250-350 miles so why wait longer to fill it up?

Get gas with 3 pips with yor mother in law.
Get gas with two pips with your spouse.
Get gas with one pip with a friend who will help carry the 3 gallons you need to restart when out of gas.
If it starts blinking, get gas now!

There are massive downsides to running out

I run a gen 2 out of gas twice here in the driveway matter of fact pulling into the driveway because the gas stations right up the street from my house and I should be going there but I go to my house car runs out red triangle comes on I'm thinking all kinds of stupid mess then I realized I'm supposed to be getting gas and I'm out of gas All I did in the driveway was pour some lawn mower gas which is 93 octane into the Prius maybe a gallon get in the car push the on button put it in reverse going to the gas station engine fired right up when I threw it and drive and that was that didn't cause me any problems at all I've run out of gas twice like that in the driveway. Two different cars. That electric pump just starts picking up the fuel you dump in it and shoots it right up to the motor and starts right up.
