I have a 2005 Prius. I recently replaced the head lamps. I found out I have the expensive ones, WAGNER D2R (HID (intense white light)) w/ Xenon Gas. I don't drive much at night. We were out last night and the illumination was terrible. I looked around a little bit here, I didn't find anything that talked to this issue. I am thinking I need to get the headlights aiming checked. Any thoughts?

Could be the lens are cloudy. They should be clear as glass. They can be polished with diy kits and usually last about a year.

I have not had any experience with the headlight aiming with the HID setup yet I have an HID setup sitting right here in an '08 car and actually it seems pretty close the headlight aiming It has the automatic adjuster outback and everything but it's a southern car so nothing is really been sitting in the wet so I think the adjusters working It looks like on the back of the adjuster there is an adjustment that you can tweak with a wrench that will set the HIDs more up or down it looks like by looking at the back of the adjuster which is in the back left wheel I think or the back left side of the car It's a funny looking little thing. Anyway I'm thinking about talking to Aux beam and see if they will make me up a set of the S2 fanless lamp assemblies with the D4 whatever base it is we need I don't really want the fan type I have the s2's in my H4 halogen 07 Prius with no problems the headlight housings are similar I don't see why they won't make me a set without the fans if they do I will give them a shot I know that when I put the LEDs in the halogen car I have to crank the adjusters down eight and a half turns and then the cutoff is clearly visible and then I put that on the garage door where I want it and then go do the other side I'm not sure what happens with the HID lamp assemblies this is the first time I'll be trying anything with those but I think HID scatters similar to LED so if your aim is close and your HID set up if you put LED bulbs in there the aim should be real close I would think.

They are clear less the chips in the lenses. This car spends most of its time in the garage.

If you truly have Toyota HID lighting in your car if you go to the rear of your car there is a automatic headlight adjuster there are pictures of it here online If your car is not in a rust bucket state and everything looks pretty clean underneath the car you can undo the two 10 mm bolts and drop the headlight adjuster down to look at it closer You can basically see if water has intruded into the plastic assembly there is also what looks to be a flat on the back of the headlight adjuster that looks to me like you would take a wrench or something and you can move this adjuster like a bolt and it looks like it will adjust the headlights as you move the stud sticking out the back of the auto headlight adjuster I'm not positive about this but I took one out of the junkyard the other day to look at because I have an HID car here and this is what looks like goes on I haven't looked at the factory manual to see if that's the case I don't know which direction would lift the lights up or down either but I'm sure it will be covered in the manual then the up and down adjusters which are attached to the spot where the front adjusters are there's a little electric motor but yet there's still the manual adjustment shark teeth looking wheels up in the front so without looking at the instructions in the manual on how you would set up the headlights initially I'm not sure but it looks like there's a few adjustments and would probably be pretty easy to make using the garage door 20 ft away at dusk or at night something along those lines but it looks like if they were aimed correctly and all that they seem to work pretty well. My 08 has HID with adjusters and I have a left bulb out but from what I can see with the right side working the illumination looks quite decent doesn't look too lower or anything and the fog lights on this car I just put 6K LEDs in and I can almost see the fog lights better than the headlights but the headlights are original and very old and one's burn out so I'm assuming when I put new bulbs in LEDs or HIDs they should be quite the lights

What I do know is I bought the PHILIPS 9003PR lamps and when I took the headlight assembly out, these were not the bulbs that were in the assemblies. Now knowing what the bulbs looked like, I went to the local stores to buy them. At AutoZone I learned they were only about $100!!!!!! I went back to Rock Auto and found a closeout on the WAGNER D2R bulbs. Tore the car apart again and replaced the bulbs. This time I noticed the D2R is on the headlight assembly BUT you have to remove the assembly to see this.

I just rented a Mazda CX-5 on a recent trip and the light pattern was much brighter than I am experiencing with my Prius. I just replaced the struts all around on the car and they were easy to RnR. This car is pretty rust and corrosion free. I will see if I can find some pictures or video of how to adjust these or just bite the bullet and take it to a shop. I don't live too far from Atomic Auto in Portland.

If you bought D2R bulbs or whatever you said yeah those are HID lighting in the back of the car there is a headlight adjuster that is supposed to adjust the HID lights on the outer rear of that adjuster is this threaded flat and what looks to be like a pointer I'm sure if you look in the manual which is here online you will find the adjustment setups for the HID lights and then from that point the automatic adjuster will adjust the lamps when the back end of the car is lifted or lowered like there's a load on it so the headlights won't be aiming up and shining in people's eyes on the HID system you wouldn't make the adjustment or the trim adjustment on the headlight assemblies themselves I would think you would do it at the back of the car on the headlight adjuster but that's just me you'd have to read the manual and see I just got an HID car saw the sensor in the back haven't messed with it I put LEDs in the HID car and they seem to be bright the aim seems reasonable people aren't flashing so what do I know.

I looked at the self-leveling on the car. It looked and acted fine. I did take it off and apart. Bent up the contact fingers some. There is no adjustment on this part,8940847010. Tried to upload a picture but I am blocked. Will see if I can get to the manual adjustments on the headlights.

Okay so on the back of your headlight adjuster that you cleaned and looked at and all that did you see the flat but threaded tab sticking out the back with flats on it looks like it's made to adjust for the level of the car or what do you put the car on level ground so on and so forth Is that not what that flat threaded tab is sticking through the back of the self-leveler? I haven't looked in the manual I was just guessing it makes perfect sense to me but if that's not what it is that's not what it is You've obviously looked or whatever I saw post from somebody maybe it was you that took this thing apart and cleaned it or replaced some o-rings or something in there I'm banking the one I took off the car here in the southeast United States but doesn't look like it has a drop of rust on it or anything is in fine shape The one on the car that I have is from Florida and I don't know that it's not in fine shape nothing seems to be wrong with my HIDs other than one wasn't working and we put in a plug and play set of LEDs. That's why I was referring maybe to look at the manual for the adjustment procedure because it seems to me Yes you can do them one by one right up there at the front of the car where you do the adjustment for up and down right next to the radiator there's an adjustment spot right there so I guess you could set both headlights on the garage door where you want them and then they should more or less stay there until the back of the car gets weighted down and they start aiming up to the people's eyes and I guess the leveler will put them back down in theory. I guess I need to try and find the adjustment instructions and read over them but the leveler I'm holding here looks like that would be an adjustment sticking through the back or why would it be there maybe?

Seems like I am not the only one who thinks their HID headlights are a little lacking.
"I was fed up with the lousy HID system (stock) in my Prius. I tried to upgrade to a 55w HID kit from DDM and the difference in output was marginal to barely noticeable. I also didn't care much for the look of the aftermarket bulbs. They were either too blue or too yellow. I had to face the simple fact that reflector style housings and HIDs just don't work well."
