This "no other codes" part bugs me. P3000 is a code from the hybrid vehicle control ECU (up in the instrument panel area) and typically means you have some more-specific code from the battery ECU (inside the battery enclosure) telling you what's what.

I would usually interpret this as meaning your code-scanning tool/app is showing you HV control ECU codes but not battery ECU codes. On the other hand, you've got a tool that shows you battery block voltages, which are also from the battery ECU, so it's not completely unable to communicate with the battery ECU. Odd.

Can you at least get the INF code for the P3000 in the HV control ECU? That would still be a little better than shooting in the dark.

P3000 is the only code, someone told me to drive it more to get more codes but I was thinking that may do more damage than good. I ordered Techstream and am hoping that will get more codes before I get a new battery.

Probably a misconception involved there: the P3000 doesn't come first. The hybrid vehicle control ECU sets that code because other codes are reported by the battery ECU.

It is quite common on PriusChat to see posters saying they have "only" some code whose meaning is known to be that other codes are present. Comes of using scan tools that are not retrieving codes from all ECUs in the car.

This specific situation is a little less familiar to me, as the P3000 does have five different INF codes, and some are more often seen than others, and I'm not prepared to bet the farm that there have to be certain battery ECU codes for every possible P3000 INF code—though I would easily bet, say, a coffee.

Knowing the P3000 INF code would at least be a little more helpful; then you at least know which one of five basic situations you're in, rather than shooting all in the dark.

As an aside, which dash warning lights are on when you have this P3000?

I don’t know what the lights all stand for but I did purchase a Techstream OBDii cable and l got the codes P3000, P0A80, P3024, C1259, C1310, and the classic solar sensor code.

Thank you. My connector has a teeny bit of corrosion that I have sprayed electronic cleaner on. I also cleaned my hybrid battery fan while I was working on the connector. My next step is going to be cleaning that more with some de ox it and a nylon carburetor cleaning brush that I purchased from Amazon for $6. I don’t think that’s the problem, though because I got a bunch of other codes including P3000, P0A80, P3024, C1259, and C1310, when I utilized my new Techstream cable.

P0A80 and P3024 are both set by the ECU inside the traction battery, telling you the traction battery is considered end-of-life (P0A80) with the biggest offender being block 14 (P3024).

P3000 was then set by the Hybrid Vehicle Control ECU to say "yo, heard about some trouble from the battery ECU".

C1259 and C1310 were then set by the brake/skid ECU to say "yo, heard about some trouble from the HV control ECU".

Given the recent work done inside the battery, it's probably worthwhile to use Techstream and see just what the voltage and internal-resistance readings for block 14 are (found in the battery ECU data list), just in case, for example, there was a mishap in reconnecting the sensing lines.

Yes, so I did take a photo of the voltages but cannot upload them. I will write the values below.

Quick question, block 14 is the one closest to the driver’s side on the left, correct?

The Voltage on that block is 15.09. I didn’t get an internal resistance reading but I will do that before disconnecting and reopening.

I didn’t extensively clean the corrosion off of the wires and connectors because they were in rough almost fragile looking shape after 207k miles and lots of blue fuzz. I did what I could with vinegar and a toothbrush. There’s still blue corrosion on some of the wire connections. Is there any info out there on how to work up the harness if I need to?

So I went back in and took the codes again. I still have codes but the voltages are reading differently at 16.59 and then 15.65 on block 14 the second time, block 1 also showed lower this time at 14.85. The internal resistance on all of them was showing consistently 0.19 both times I ran the codes on all blocks. I have no idea why the voltages change with various readings.

Here’s an update. After learning how to use a multimeter, torque wrench, clean the corrosion from the fan plugs with electronics cleaner, then de ox it and a carburetor cleaner nylon brush when it arrived in the mail, how to clean the mild corrosion off of the HV ECU next to the battery, how to use tech stream to read codes and voltages, i went to the local toyota and purchased a brand new hybrid battery. I installed it and that seemed to fix the problem. I also worked on sealing my car up more with flexseal and i cleaned out the 12v battery well. I’m pretty committed to this car. I will try to update this with a lot of detail for newbs like me later on.

Nice work, I am impressed. I am curious what you paid for the new hybrid battery from your local Toyota dealership. Would you mind sharing that info with the Prius Chat community?

A 2008 with 207k miles was definitely due for a new hybrid battery.

I hope that your Prius is trouble-free for many more years.

Thanks. It was $1950 with a $1350 refundable core fee.

Hi Maria, Well done on the work! The great thing about a new OEM battery is that when properly installed, you have another 10-15 years of life and a lot of reliability to look forward to!

For future reference only, the 0.19 shown on techstream for internal resistance of a block is the default value the ecu applies after a loss of 12v power and also immediately after doing a code reset. This value will 'recalibrate' after a bit of use. A new battery like yours will likely stay at 19 or maybe 20/21ish for quite a while. Older batteries, that are still in good condition (like an original 2005/175k miles I recently examined), are typically in the 29/30 range.

If you ever have another Gen 2 battery to play with, the wire harness you're discussing above is available from Toyota for about $65.
The orange heavy gauge orange (long one that connects to neg terminal, the short one for the positive terminal, and the safety disconnect assembly are also available separately from Toyota.

Awesome! This new battery should have a much longer life because of upgrades made to the chemistry back in 2015 that allow 30% boost in power both in charging and discharging. New hybrid cars have 150k warranty on it. But I think the only issue you will still have is corrosion. I personally have switched to nickle plated bus bars for over 5 years now and have no issues.

If you connect techstream to your car, what does it show as the max available charge and discharge limit? Should read in KW.

With all the inverter software updates Toyota has been implementing, that may not show the full potential of a newer battery. But Maria can still try to check her techstream data and see if there is a difference.

The maximum power output from the HV battery, whether charge or discharge, is limited to this number regardless of software. I'm curious if the Gen 3 numbers are 30% higher than the Gen 2.

Toyota did something they never did before with a Prius in 2016.
They advertised trailer towing capabilities (with modification to the cooling systems).
