2013 Pruis V Five Repair quoted over $7500

    I'm at a loss. I have had my 2013 V since 2021. It has 115k on it. I received the brake booster alarms and took it to two different shops (independent and dealer). Repair quote for the Brake Booster Assembly is $3500 from both shops. The dealer also quoted the Timing Cover Gasket with a crank seal and tensioner gasket for $3800.

    I'm just at a loss for how high dollar of a repair is expected for this vehicle. This is my first Toyota and I'm very much regretting this purchase. I was expecting some EGR preventative maintenance, but failures with this low of miles has me very upset. I don't have the dealer do all my maintenance, but it has been to the dealer in 2022 for an alignment check and they didn't mention any recalls. Now with the brake booster issue, the 10 year warranty expired in April of 2023. When I search the vin, there is no active recalls.

    For a vehicle worth $8000 in good condition, is this vehicle even worth repairing? This would be by far the most repair investment I would put into a vehicle. My Chevy's and Ford's lasted into 200k with standard maintenance care.

    I don't know what to do. Save my money to go towards another vehicle? I asked the dealership to quote me trade in for this car as is and they ghosted me.

    what trouble codes are you getting?

    prices seem a little high, do you need the gaskets?

    on the downside, you might be facing a battery and head gasket or engine down the road.

    you're right about this model, a disappointment in toyota quality

    Sorry. A few of us try to warn prospective buyers of this generation of Prius.

    Timing chain covers routinely leak and are not worth fixing until and when you need a head gasket or engine.

    An independent shop would charge $2500 or less for the brake booster. It is a critical safety item so most want new. The parts are often available from online Toyota dealers for around $1000 but the install is tricky along with calibrations and special bleed procedures. It is worth fixing it even if you want to sell because the car’s value in this shape is seriously reduced. A dealer would send the car to auction where they might get $500-$1000 as is. So if little to no trade in value broken.

    There is a new brake booster rebuilder Hybridpit in Southern California who reportedly will take your assembly, repair it and send it back for $550.

    Removal and installation would be done in your city by an experienced independent who would agree to this arrangement. It could reduce the overall brake booster cost well below $2k but divides responsibility on a many hour job - plus would sideline your car for a week or two.

    Yeah look for yourself regarding the the timing chain cover leakage. You can see from above (looking down passenger end of engine, aka “front”). A better view is raising front passenger wheel, removing a few of the push-in fasteners on the inside plastic wall of wheel well, and flexing it back.

    when this leakage and fix first started getting reported here, say around 2012, dealerships were quoting around $1700 USD, half of what they’re trying to gouge you for.

    Personally, I wouldn't worry about the timing chain cover, if it is a weep.

    It might also be an inexpensive repair, if it is the crank pulley seal.
