2019 Prius XLE - Tire Replacement

    42K miles and tread is great, but front left tire has a gouge right near the rim and it's leaking so needs replacement. Do we need to replace in pairs or have to do all four?

    Regarding choices of tire, I'm really prone to Michelins (like the stiff sidewalls and handling) but any better recommendations?

    This really depends if you have rotated the tires. If you have not rotated them regularly, the front tires would wear out much sooner (since this is front wheel drive and you do all your turning on the front tires). If the rear tires still look good compared to the front, then you might get lucky and just have to replace the fronts.

    42k miles is pretty good for a stock set of tires. On my Rav4, I had to replace all 4 at 30k miles.

    The gash was discovered when the car was brought in for service. On the video review of the vehicle, the tech reported the tread as 'great' and didn't give numbers. Toyota wanted (hold on to your hats) $427.71 to replace the BluEarth S34 tire. ONE tire.

    The care has been serviced per the schedule (well, pretty much) and the tires rotated. The one with the gash was previously on the rear and that's where the damage happened.

    Simple answer is “Nope”. You might want to consider it if tread wear is going to require it soon, or considering age (tire age of 5 to 7 or 8 years should be replaced depending on exposure to the elements: garage kept/stored outside, desert type environment versus upper Midwest, etc). But otherwise there is no real reason to buy more than one, however, try to replace it with the same brand and model to minimize the risk of mixing driving characteristics.
