    Yes. Like I said, I don't really think it's absolutely necessary on AWD as long as you're using the black hard foam protector from my picture series as that foam protector keeps the tire away from the AWD connector on its own. But this piece of steel just adds an additional layer of protection over the connector.

    I'd say it's more important to use this steel protector if you're doing a cheaper DIY setup and cutting your own foam pieces for the tire to set on. I'll post more pics once I pick up some nuts and if it's not too cold to work outside(currently 4C and raining).

    Photos of the install. Took longer to take all the stuff out and put it back in.

    You can see in the 3rd photo that the foam protector covers the same area the steel protector does. (the 3rd photo is taken at an angle)

    My total cost to add an OEM spare to my XLE AWD was $596.14

    You could probably get away cheaper if tried to make your own foam inserts but I wanted OEM. I already got burned by having a flat in this car and the piece of mind of having a real spare is great. I didn't know car makers were moving away from spares so it was a shock to be stranded on the side of the road with only the little compressor and tire goop cartridge...

    I got tasked with making some training videos at work so I figured this would be a good little project to try out some really basic video editing. I got all my parts today and grabbed my phone to record the install. It won't be winning a best picture award but shows the process if you want something to follow or see. I didn't end up moving the wiring as with the metal part it seems to be sitting above enough to not worry me.

    Thanks for the video and shoutout.

    I agree with not moving the wiring. In retrospect, I wouldn't have done it, though it's not causing any problems. I just wasn't 100% certain at the time if the black pad was going to be able to lay flush with the wiring underneath it.

    I also need to get you and lohikaarme the measurements for the four rubber blocks that are glued to the bottom of the deck board. I'll do that next week once I get my winter tires mounted and the all-seasons stored away(my cargo space is currently full of tires). You're going to want to add the blocks as I suspect the deck board will flex and probably crack/crease without them if you have a heavy point-load in the back in the wrong spot.


    As for cost, I think my parts cost was lower, though the shipping and customs from Japan brought the overall price higher. If I hadn't ordered that stupid deck board, I think I would've stayed under your total. My order included a bunch of other stuff, so it's hard to say how much of the shipping was for the spare tire, and how much was for the mirrors and light kits.

    Anyway, it's nice to see a few of us actually getting the conversion done.

    Hello, is it possible to please confirm the parts needed for a 2024 Prius LE?

    Based on my guess:

    You DO need the following:
    42611-21280 - Wheel, Disc
    09105-47020 - Jack set and tools
    T145/90D16 - Tire

    Are these the correct depth/dimensions for the LE trim?
    64997-47100 - Box, Deck Floor, LH
    64995-47080 - Box, Deck Floor, RH
    51931-10040 - Carrier, Spare Wheel, RH
    64778-47090 - Protector, Spare Wheel

    You do NOT need the following for an LE trim:
    51978-47010 - Protector, Spare Wheel
    90179-06274 - Nut( Need to buy 3)

    Very nice write-up. I purchased the spare tire setup from Modern Spare. Received it a few days ago and am very happy with quality. To confirm, can I use the Modern Spare with this OEM spare housing kit?

    All correct, with one caveat.

    There are two parts different on the LE compared to the other trims. I cannot absolutely guarantee they will work perfectly with the other parts on this list.

    1. The plastic trim that forms the bottom of the hatch opening and where the deck floor boxes latch onto. Because the LE has a lower floor, those latching points are lower than in an XLE or Limited. The black plastic clips might not reach down far enough. If you look at the bottom left corner of the photo below, you'll see one of the two attachment points(the tab with the hole in it). In the LE, those points are an inch or two lower. It's possible they might work fine with the taller deck boxes, but I can't promise anything.

    2. The deck board. Because the floor is lower in the LE, the creases in the deck board where it folds against the rear seats are in different places. I just don't know if the LE deck board will work smoothly when the rear seats are up.


    Oh, and if you have a carpet mat or cargo tray, it probably won't fit after the conversion. The LE carpet mat has "wings" on the left and right sides for the areas behind the frame rails. After the conversion, the floor will rise up a couple inches in the middle and those wings will now hang over the sides.

    I put the part numbers for these extra parts in one of my earlier posts if you end up needing them.

    I don't know. In the picture I inserted in the post just above this one, you can see that the black foam protector is shaped in a particular way. If the wheel that Modern Spare uses is different enough, the spare could lay too low or too high. It would probably be close enough that it could work with a little massaging, but I can't promise a perfect fit right out of the box.

    Note: Modern Spare offers the 135/70 for the gen5 Prius when they should really be offering the 135/80. If you ended up with the 70, it might not set perfectly into the ring molded into the black foam protector. Or it might fit just fine. I really don't know, but I thought I should give the heads up.

    Placed my order through IMPEX Japan and the initial (3) items shipped for a reasonable $80 USD for FedEx Economy shipping to California:

    However, I was requested more funds would be required to ship the (3) foam inserts:

    I was quoted $1,334 USD additional... I am requesting a confirmation on price as these are crack head shipping prices. I will definitely NOT be shipping the foam inserts. GTFO

    Impex Japan shipping department got back to me and said they could ship "cheaper" using DHL for a mere $486.52 + $112.65
    (for parts). That's just crazy. I'm canceling and purchasing the last (3) items from Lewis Toyota parts for $425.70 total

    I put a spare in my car donut tire got the toyota hold down part 51961-02110 put my new jack in next to the tire not perfect but works tried t o get the Toyota foam parts they said 6 month of more I think a full size spare would even fit better xle Front drive

    I'd check that first. It's easy as removing one your current wheel/tire combos and trying to drop it in. Doing that with third gen I found it to be chafing the sidewalls of the spare tire well, not all the way down, sitting about 2 inches higher. But yeah, look before you leap.
