My carplay is usually fine but if I ever go on another trip, how could I play CDs in the car through the speakers in the car? Yes, I could probably copy the cds into iTunes but we're talking about a LOT of books on cd which have lots of disks each, so there's the space issue as well as the time to do all the copying. It would be nice if there was device I could buy to plug in somehow (bluetooth? USB?) and just play the disks in such a way that I could select it in the infotainment system.

    Is there a way?

Have you looked for a portable cd player with blue tooth?

Yes, but most of them say something like "works with speakers but not with car systems." Plus I'm not sure if it would disrupt carplay which is pretty fragile as it is in my car. It's probably hopeless.

So I tried with a USB-C —> USB-A adapter and an external CD drive connected to the phone/multimedia port… but no luck.
The drive spins up, but it doesn’t read anything. Guess Toyota’s multimedia system doesn’t have drivers / doesn’t know what to with discs.
