I've tried changing the fuel cap twice and the smell doesn't seem to be emanating from the fuel door compartment, it's lower near the wheel well, slightly forward if I had to guess. I've been getting the codes for about a year, clear them and they come back in a week or so. MPG isn't terribly affected, maybe down 1 or 2 MPG. Is there anything I can look for to try and figure out what is going on or is there a common issue? I'm more comfortable working in the engine compartment, I don't have a lift so it's hard for me to get in and diagnose that area.

I think there is some evap business back there in the back near the gas tank just under the filler neck something you'd have to look on the parts breakdown or the schematic of the car but there is some hosing back there and some valves or what have you that I guess could leak or emanate some smell you know. I mean are you saying you've never noticed this before or you sure that this is never been this way all the time? I mean I have two generation threes I don't really notice any fuel smells really anywhere on the car unless I've just filled the car up because I really feel the car up till it burps and then some the way you're not supposed to do it.

I started noticing the smell after the codes starting appearing. It dissipates rather quickly after driving so I think it's only leaking when the system is pressurized. Was wondering about a fuel line connection or maybe charcoal canister (I don't overfill), but not sure what to look for, how to diagnose, or even how to get under there really.
