Hello everybody. Today I have visited a car dealer, I was looking for a Pruis 30 2010 (I want to buy my first car), and I have found a pretty one. I asked dealer to check the car system, so he plugged in some kind of adapter, opened his laptop and launched a system check. There was one failure, but I don't remember its title, some checks were not launched and a lot of checks were passed without any problem. Then we decided to take a short drive to see the condition of the car. Everything was fine, but after 10 minutes of trip, when we were already approaching the dealership, the “check hybrid system” error appeared. The dealer checked his computer and said that this error was supposedly due to the low battery on his computer. Then he turned off his computer and put it away. The question is: did the dealer deceive me that this "check hybrid system" error appeared due to a low battery on his computer or is it a problem with the car? This car adapter for checkup was plugged in while test ride. Thanks for your answers

A 2010 Prius is old enough to potentially be a money pit of problems:

Head gasket, traction battery (AKA high voltage battery), water pump, brake booster/accumulator, etc.

    I'd avoid it.

    SM-G781V ?

Don't do it my friend run as quickly as possible You're in Pennsylvania too run even faster You're making a big mistake I don't care if they're giving you the car for free what kind of job do you have? You live in the Northeast United States these cars do pretty poorly in the salt and those conditions unfortunately by the way things are looking and sounding you'd be better off with a Yaris or a Corolla My honest opinion is the dealer lying the dealer mechanic is telling you what he saw when he scanned the car and if he's not talking a whole lot and that's the kind of person he is or he's staying quiet because he knows the troubles these cars have and he doesn't want to spend a whole lot of free time and a lot of hot air talking to somebody that flies a desk doesn't know anything about a car etc so on and so forth a lot of mechanics are like this because when they talk to regular people well it just seems kind of pointless to them You have to understand people that work on things for other people and or for money

It sounds like this is a first car purchase for a person that's not really in the car club kind of mentality You just want to get to work drive your car show it to your friends get on with your life this is not the car for that I promise you I am sorry but that is a fact If you want to enjoy your life and get to work and all that sort of stuff and not become a car person and all of that take my advice above a Yaris or Corolla will serve you a lot better and you won't even have to know what a torque wrench is or any of that ever unless you just have that kind of interest and you're bored or whatever the case may be. Or buy a generation 2 Prius that's been well cared for with paperwork and a caring owner that will go over the basics with you and whatever you think you need to do That's not hard to find you just have to seek that sort of thing but without doing any of it and not having pretty much a care in the world a Yaris or Corolla Will allow you to concentrate on what's important to you in life and not how you're going to get there or arrive.

thanks for your answer! I work at Lowe's, it's 15 minutes from home by car, and I wouldn't drive a lot everyday. What about dealer, yes, it seemed to me, that dealer keep back some info about this car and I remember he was trying to hide one "faulted" check on his laptop, and then another one problem appered on dashboard. I wrote a text message to postpone the purchase (but I am not going to buy, just told him that)

thanks for you answer. Yes, in other situation I might to go all in, but not now... I am sure this car can drive a lot of miles, but maybe after a huge repair only.

thanks, I will try to look for Corolla or Yaris. Do you know since which year it is better to buy car? I mean 2010 is ok or it's too old?

What was the asking price? If it's $2-3000, okay. Because a NEW battery will
    cost about $2000-3000.
It "might" be a low 12v battery. But since you don't know anything about the Prius,
it's probably not worth the expense of learning about them since you likely won't
be able to drive the car.
Search for a 2015 model Prius, which will be in much better condition.
And stay away from that dealer!!!! They can't be trusted! If they lie about this, they
    WILL lie about other things.

It's not even close to 3000... So yes, I am not sure if I will learn about Pruis too much, I just need a car with good fuel consumption and that's why I decided to choose Pruis. And I decided to buy an old car because I don't have much savings for now

    Is the car dealer lying?

Was his mouth open and lips moving?

On a more serious note, I would avoid the 2010-2014 (?) years as they seem to have the most problems with head gasket issues/bent connecting rods. I think it was 2015 that Toyota made some changes to alleviate that problem.

Personally, I would avoid a 2010-2011 like it was the plague, regardless of miles or hybrid alarms. If the dealer was leaving his laptop connected, he was expecting something to happen and he's trying to pull the wool over your eyes if he's attempting to blame his laptop battery getting low.

The funny part is I would have been like "cool, let me connect mine real quick".

Yes, they lied to you. Stay very far away from this dealer and the car. Gen 3 Prius (2010-2015) have many problems. If you want a Prius, look at 2016 and newer.

thanks! I will save your recommendations,
unfortunately, I don't have my own equipment to check, so I need to buy it first

thanks! I will look at carmax for this years, but maybe cars are overpriced there, I think so

Thanks! the mileage is different on sourses I saw, she printed info on a paper, and there I saw about 160, in the car counter showed about 170, I don't remember exactly, I thought it was strange, but I thought maybe the dealer had mixed up the cars

If you could find a 2009 Yaris and very good condition pretty much regardless of mileage if the car was in good condition looked good was cared for even if it had $230,000 mi on it it'll go to 500 easily easily you'll get tired of it before that generally speaking. Scion XA very similar little wagon back thing similar engine all of that they'll go forever unless rust or an accident takes them out and they're easy to work on there's no excuse not to keep the car on the road unless you're just going to be carless or you're going back to a horse or something I don't know One of the most inexpensive pieces of machinery you can possibly own and if you can do anything a few tools you can work on one of those very easily.

Yes, he was lying. That error message has no relationship to his laptop battery charge.
