Hi Susan. Sorry for the well-delayed response, we’ve been busy here at the shop moving into other states and expanding, and my email has been flooded so I haven’t seen anything from prius chat. Here’s what I can tell you.

First off, Dr Prius is excellent for diagnosing a poor battery. However, I’ve never used the lifespan test during my work as more often than not we are dealing with batteries that have failed already and I typically don’t have a lot of extra time for myself or my employees to drive around and do tests with the app. But it’s very well put together and it will help you immensely from what I’ve heard.

Now, for the direct answer to your question based on my experiences:

If your battery meter is diving at a rapid pace like that climbing a grade, your capacity is extremely low. This doesn’t necessarily mean your battery is about to fail, but it’s typically a good indication. 15 years is a lot of time, and being that these are typically rated at 10 years from factory, you are running on borrowed time on that aged battery pack. If you plan on keeping the car, it would be a good idea to get a quality reconditioned battery pack.

That being said, I never try and urge a customer to acquire a pack from us if they are hesitant. This is your call. We replace probably 10 percent of our batteries on speculation of a near failure in older vehicles. Typically if your HV battery failure occurs during a drive, you will be able to limp it home and you won’t be stranded. I’ve seen customers drive on failed batteries for hundreds of miles before calling for a replacement (please do not do this as you are playing with fire).

As far as performance, I can guarantee you will see much improved battery strength with one of our reconditioned packs. Our equipment is top notch and our building parameters are very very very strict on what we send out to customers. I cannot guarantee fuel economy numbers because I do not know the state of your vehicle’s ICE engine (gas engine) and it’s components as well as a few other variables. However, I can say that our battery’s added performance over your aging battery will certainly bring some sort of a noticeable MPG boost.

This might not be related, but just in case anyone else wondering is reading, here’s a last bit of info on our procedures and how they differ from competitors. We always complete a thorough diagnostic of your vehicle with Toyota tech stream and check the health of your 12v battery and check your fluids as well to make sure everything else is going well.

Hopefully these pieces of information and explanation were helpful enough and thorough enough, respectfully. Look forward to hearing from you. Contact me any time.

    -Best Regards

    Cole

How does one know if a 14-15 yr old Gen2's refurbished battery can still hold a charge well?
My 2007's green battery just looks at a mild upwards grade and immediately turns purple. Once going up the hill, it is running only on the gas motor and holding up the trucks.
It still can charge into the green zone and is not throwing Codes, which seems to be the standard for a refurbished hybrid battery. I just dont want to drop one in and find out it is just as bad as my old one, but not covered under warranty because it is not throwing codes.

You might consider reconditioning the HV battery with a grid charger.

I just got my battery installed by Hybrid2go and it was the best decision I have Made. Two techs installed my battery at my job in ten mins!! Also the tech informed me of some corrosion that was on my other battery that was located in the back. The owner personally answered all of my questions and was up front about everything! OH MY GOD I paid 1600 bucks for a refurbished battery and install?!? You can’t get that anywhere, that is a hook up! So, if you want to save money be sure to call Hybrid2go asap! eBay is 1900 plus for a refurbished battery not including install Toyota of Redlands in Cali wants 3200 for a new battery that isn’t including the install!!. that i rather pay 1600 with an unlimited warranty on the battery which includes the install! Thanks Hybrid2go for hooking me up!! The owner is all about his word! I love it!

Business must be slow at H2Go. You sound like a used car salesman. I'll remember never to get a H2Go battery.

Maybe Cole can specifically address my concerns from these complaints & concerns raised above---here's a couple of the complaints I found online that seemed to hit home with me--: I'm needing to replace my failed hybrid battery also & want to go with the lower price of Hybrid2go with the "Lifetime warranty" but am concerned with some of the concerns raised above...then searching online I came across some troubling reviews and now find it not safe/reliable in my opinion. Anyone have warranty experience with them preferably a year or more out? Here's the reviews that concerned me are on complaintsboard & search for hybrid to go c1357961

    Welcome to PriusChat!!
He hasn't logged into this site in almost a year.

Wonder if @ericbecky has had any contact recently?

Just to clarify, many would recommend against buying a "used" battery, and tell you to purchase a new OEM, or a new aftermarket instead.

How long do you plan on keeping the vehicle?

Do you have some basic tools and a DIY attitude?

    FYI : you're moderated until you've posted 5 times.

    +1 to SFO

There is no standard to define what is done to "recondition" or "refurbish" or "rebuild" a High Voltage battery. Maybe it's a bunch of used modules that happen to test about the same. Maybe they take used modules then charge & discharge cycle them to improve capacity and match similar capacity ones together.

Who knows? They all start with used modules. Experiences reported on this site indicate you might get a few years of use before it fails... Or a few months... Or maybe days.

On the other hand, the OE battery typically goes 10-15 years without problem. I think there has been 1 or 2 posts about a fault with a correctly installed Toyota battery.

I just got a new (not refurbished) replacement battery from Hybrid2Go and it was a great experience. Quick response time, great pricing, and quick service. My Prius is running great, and I feel like I can get many more years out of it (it’s a little over 13 years and 120k miles old). Thanks to Cole and Xavier from Hybrid2Go. Would definitely recommend them!
