What brand tires do you have on your Gen5?

The Michelins are more expensive but much better ride quality especially regarding sound.

 

When my factory tires go out I'll end up with Michelin's. But that's probably a few years away, Michelin's do well for the winter though. Big fan. Though I think blizzaks are a smidge nicer

 

Anybody tried other tire sizes on stock rims?

 

Not a lot of choices with the 19's
I'm thinking of ditching them completely for either 17's or 16's

I have a dedicated winter tire on seperate 16's that I'm really happy with from TireRack. At least half the weight of the OEM 19's
Although, there's so much life left on the OEM tires it's hard for me not to just ride them hard til the tires need replacing.

 

Boy, you can say that again! When I got my 24 Prime SE in December, I had the dealer swap out the stock 17 inch Toyo Extensa AS tires for some new Michelin X-Ice Snows I picked up at Canadian Tire. So, I never got to see what the Toyos are like. Today, I finally removed my winter tires and mounted the Toyos on some new 17" Borbet wheels, as I like to have separate sets so switching is easier every six months. Wow, immediately noticed the noise, even at lower speeds. I'd estimate 5-6 db louder all around. And this is comparing an AS to a winter tire! Michelin really makes great tires.

As a matter of fact, I was all set to just order some Defender 2's and Craigslist the brand new original Toyos. But I looked up the tire weights on Tire Rack. Going from the stockers to the Def 2s, and, I'll grant you, I was upping the size some - from 195-60-17 to 215-55-17, to get a bit more grip and keep size at + 1%, well... get this - the Michelins weigh 8 lbs more! 32 pounds of added unsprung weight! So, I decided to give these Toyos a run for the season. But, the noise difference was not small. As far as handling, the X-ICE seemed at least as good as the TOYOs on a dry road. Would like to hear from Michelin Primacy A/S owners, are they nice and quiet, and are they heavy? What about other tires that are a bit grippier? I've just heard so much good about the Defenders, oh well.

 

dang that's wild. My stock tires are the bridgestone ecopia 422. So they are hopefully quieter than the snow tires. I know the ecopias on my other car are quieter than my blizzaks.

 

Michelin CrossClimate2 on MSW 17x7.5 inch aftermarket wheels replacing OEM Extensa tires and stock 19 inch wheels.

 

That's almost exactly my experience(except with 19" and the opposite direction). I'm almost dreading going back to the Toyos. I keep hoping for one or two more snowstorms so i can keep the Michelins on for another month. I'm also hoping for Michelin to come out with Defenders in stock sizes or, better yet, Pilot Sport A/S 4(or 5).

(We're having 40C(70F) swings in temps this week in my location, so who knows what tire to use. lol Today's high is 16C/60F with an expected low of -10C/13F tonight, tomorrow's low is expected to be -19C/-2F, and we're supposed to get back up to near 20C/70F later in the week.)

 

Still getting storms here in the CO mtns so keeping the Blizzaks on.
Not looking forward to putting back on the Toyos w/19"

I am seriously thinking of buying new 17" wheels and have better tire options and ditch the 19's

noisy, handling is fine, braking is fine. Hard to compare since I have not had any other tire on my Prius.

I will not be re-purchasing the same tire once tread life is done. But not worth upgrading for now. Also, there is not very many other tire brand options for my specific size tire.

 

ah theyre noisy too? damn. I don't want to change tires either since I feel like its a waste to buy tires when perfectly capable ones are already on there :/ oh well, when the tread's gone I'll try and fine low resistance but not loud ones too

 

For those considering getting another set of tires. I am not a tire expert nor was I very methodical in reviewing my CrossClimate2 205/55R17 tires but I am very happy with them. Since I got them in September 2023, based largely on consumer reports review and size availability, consumer reports has made some changes to their test results. The changes are:

1. Tested tread life has gone from 85,000 miles to 95,000 miles
2. Ice braking has gone from good to excellent.
3. Rolling resistance has gone from fair to very good.
4. Overall Score has gone from 74 to 78

One downsize is that they will not fit on Prius 19" alloy wheels. They will fit on the 17" steel wheels though.

I got mine for around $155 a tire when Michelin was offering a promotional $100 gift card with a purchase of a set of tires but currently sell for around $180 a tire.

 

Don't want to burst your bubble but CR reports are garbage. You'll never see 85K miles.
Not saying they aren't good tires, they are. They'll be decent in snow conditions but nothing like a dedicated snow tire

 

'Michelin Primacy vs. Toyo Extensa A/S Tires'
As some of you may know/expect, there's a significant difference in price between the Michelin 'Primacy' and Toyo 'Extensa A/S' tires; you should be able to compare them/specs at following links.

Given the Michelins are about $50/ea. more than the Toyos, wonder if some Toyota Dealers might be swapping the Michelins out for Toyos upon delivery of new cars to dealership, then selling the Michelins as new?
Toyo supposedly has a 500mi./45-day 'Trial Period' on their new tires; wonder if any tire dealer selling Toyos might be willing to honor same for 'OE Tires' on new cars.

I'm hoping to possibly have the Toyo 195/50R19s on my 2024 XLE replaced with Michelin 215s, but that remains to be seen. Strangely, Toyo does not seem to have any 215s for 19" wheels; only the 195s, then 225s and 235s.

 

Michelin Defenders repeatedly lasted 85K + on my 3rd gen. Still with usable, legal tread on all four.

Not the quietest tires, but great in rain and last ages with normal driving behavior.

Consumer Reports does good work. But their tests will never account for those that drive it like they stole it.

 

Doubt a dealership is switching them out these days since neither tire is easy to find.

Do you mean 215/50R19? Have not seen anyone with that size tire on their 5th gen prius. According to KMO post on winter tires thread Toyota Finland at one point was selling tires that size but not for long probably due to clearance issues. The largest tire I have seen mounted successfully is Douglas24Prime with 225/45R19 with a 27 (1.11% bigger than OEM diameter) inch diameter but just in the rear. I have looked quite a bit on the internet too searching facebook, X, and instagram.
