How to know if the 2017 prius battery is ion lithium or nickel?

    Answered my own question. I entered my VIN here (it's the only place my Canadian VIN gave any meaningful information)

    They use NiMH in the AWD Prius because they are more likely to be driven in colder climates and NiMH performs better in the cold than Lithium.

    A really simple method to figure it out is: open the rear hatch and fold rear seats forward. If the cargo floor is at the same level as the seat backs; you car has a nickel hydride battery. If the rear cargo floor is a few inches below the level of the seat backs; the car has a Lithium Ion battery.
