Fuel Dilution and spark plugs

    I check my oil level every so often... started to smell fuel on the dipstick.
    It had been 7k miles, so i change my oil and set a sample to Blackstone labs for analysis.
    It came back with %2.5 fuel dilution.

    My questions:
    1. Should I be concerned by the fuel dilution in the oil?
    2. Should I be concerned by the plugs (see attached pic).​

    My car:
    2004 Gen2 Prius (built 11/2004)
    220k miles, I've owned it since 35k miles.
    50-52mpg, using mostly Costco regular gas
    5w-30 Mobile 1 high mileage oil is what I've used for a few years
    Installed new plugs after oil analysis result (I wanted to see plugs for fouling).
    Daily commuter. 26miles each way, 2x a day during week. %95 highway, although traffic can get heavy, so commute can be 28-60min or longer sometimes.
    I park in a garage at home... no fuel smell when I go out in the morning or evening after work.

    Car runs fine, no error codes. Idle is normal, although maybe quieter with the new plugs. After 150 miles (3 days commuting) no mpg change

    Regarding the plugs... (#1 on left, #4 on right) white fuzz on plugs is lint from paper towel..
    These are the original plugs... I've never replaced them, unless prior owner did at/before 32k miles.
    • #1 came out with a lot of effort to get started... it was very rough, like grinding ceramic chunks in a mortar.
    • the remaining plugs came out smoothly once the plug moved.
    • #2 Appears to have fair amount of oil? on threads.
    • #3 nothing special
    • #4 Appears to have fair amount of oil? on threads. This one was barely seated... hardly any effort to break free.
    I haven't cleaned the throttle body in a few years... might do that next weekend.
    PCV valve I've never checked... but if it were fault, I've read I would've had more obvious issues.

    What is your fuel dilution ever been before All Prius you'll smell gas on the dipstick somewhat most Toyotas you will actually most cars probably and especially if you're sensitive to petroleum smells. Maybe someone else here who's had an oil analysis done will chime in and see what theirs was with the mileage and everything you're getting in the car that you're driving which we have four of you're getting 50 some odd miles to the gallon I wouldn't touch a thing till it drops to say below 45 The car was only rated at 47.1 at time of production You're getting decently better mileage than that I wouldn't be fooling around with much and why?. It's okay to worry if that's the kind of person you are but doesn't seem like there's too much to be worrying about and we have cars with way more mileage than you have and I'm sure we are much harder on them than you are not trying to be funnier or anything I'm just saying we do not baby and or really take care of the cars cars are driven out in the fields and in the woods and all kinds of wild things

    Never done an analysis before, but fuel smell is something new I hadn't smelled before.
    I appreciate your time replying, thank you.

    I'm not looking to get better mpg... I can get 55+mpg if I drive more like a "typical Prius" driver, but where I commute, the left lanes are much smoother than the right... so I keep with traffic and speed a bunch.

    My main concern is harm to engine over time. I'm half tempted to pull the injectors and have a shop test/clean them.
    I will not buy Amazon/eBay units, dealership are just too pricey. I included the pic of the old plugs as they might tell someone something....

    Oh, one other info item I left out on my original post. I burn about 1/4qt oil when I change my oil at 6-7000miles....been that way for 10yrs, no change really

    Then I wouldn't be too worried gas smell in the oil a little bit I mean it shouldn't smell like it's venting when you're pumping at the pump but other than that I would say carry on You're doing very well on the oil burning business You either do with the one NZ or you don't consume oil some are worse than others I've got one that has to be checked every 10 days but the car gets decent gas mileage and everything's good with it so we leave it alone certainly not worth changing an engine or anything like that The car will be long gone before that is even a thing they roll in and out of here like water it seems like depending upon the time of year.

    Use a scantool to check data from the ECM. In particular see what the short and long term trim numbers are - at idle and at steady cruise (while the ICE is running).

    When everything is "near perfect", fuel trims are near 0%, if things are less than stellar, then fuel trims will be higher (more positive) or lower (more negative).

    Most problems with fuel control (such as injectors) will cause fuel trims to shift.

    My 2006 (217k miles) has fuel trims at 0 +/- 5%.

    I know in the older days injectors with lots of miles on them could sometimes drip a bit giving you a little more gas in your oil than you might like but then soon as the engines running it kind of burns off and cleans up but the smell is there obviously so now when I have these cars with 250 260 on them when an opportune time comes and I'm changing plugs and tuning up it's like a 40-minute job to show for remanufactured or new injectors in the system the blue green of the tan ones whatever you have You can get a whole set remanufactured by reputable company for like $69 they have to be generally better than what you're taking out it 250 to 70,000 mi my goodness.

    I haven't had a Prius long enough to need this, but rebuilt injectors has solved fuel-in-lube contamination issues I've had with other cars in the past. Pull them, mail them in, they get rebuilt and flow-tested on a stand.

    I think this is your best forward action.

    There's a couple places around me, but they only mention diesel injectors.

    Usually you pull the injectors and send them out to whoever or you buy them already done If you look on eBay you'll see the blue injectors like we have in the generation 3. Bagged up ready to go with a spec sheet showing the flow and the pattern and what have you I paid $69 last week and they came in 3 days they look exactly like what I took out with new o-rings already on them on the injectors All I have to have is the little round guides the plastic rubbers out of the head gasket kit or separately felpro has them a whopping $8 or something You lay those in the intake side of the head I stuck the floor injectors into those and then brought the rail down and use my fingers to guide them into the holes on the rail making sure that the spacers are aimed correctly on the head the plastic ones and then put the bolts and finger tight check everything make sure everybody's happy and tighten the two bolts You're finished didn't even disconnect the fuel line or anything like I'm in Central North Carolina with diesel fuel injection places right up at the top of the street I'll have to call them here in the next few days and see if they have a service where I can drop off some injectors and what will it cost when I pick them up for cleaning flowing and whatever it is they do so we'll see I wonder if they can match the $70 price I paid or what have you If so I might consider it for the four I just took out then I can rotate one or two sets in and just have them in the box here at the house.

    I recall paying about $30 per, for an old PRV engine. Shop I used isn't around anymore, but there are others using the same business model.

    For a while, some Priuschatters even had a swap chain going to reduce turnaround times. @ChapmanF might still be holding a rebuilt set, but I'm not sure they're the right model for your car.

    EDIT: adding- Have you connected any sort of diagnostics to look at fuel trims? I think I would expect to see a persistent negative LTFT if an injector were leaking.

    Yeah Chapman has a whole thread about that business some worked out some didn't so on and so forth It's all here in the text so there's always that I just picked this set up from some Asian supplier on eBay that seems to sell a whole lot of them not just for Toyota but for a pile of applications looks like they're in it to do business and stay doing business so like a lot of things I just figured I'd give him a shot I will be contacting the diesel place right up the street for me just to see what they say A lot of places like that don't really care for walking customers and little jobs but you never know this place I'm talking about up the street makes big power out of these big diesels you know like Gayle Banks and all that stuff and they're parking lot stays full of all these new Dodges and these things at Gale's talking about online that are falling apart..

    I used Torque android app on my drive in this morning (about 30min at highway speeds)

    When cruising at 65mph or when I parked my LTFT1 is %1.56, STFT1 %0.00
    Light highway acceleration (engine RPM@1600) , LTFT %2.34, STFT1 %0.78

    So looking good.

    With all the GREAT advice and info above, I think I'll let the car be. Will do another analysis when oil change is due around June.

    Watched this video on replacing injectors.... I really appreciate the issues he had, and how he resolved them (see near end)

    I do have one set still, of the ones used in the 1NZ engine for gen 1 and gen 2. (I know the c also uses a 1NZ engine but I haven't checked whether its injectors are still the same.)

    Using Torque Android app.. LTFT +2.34% to +2.37% after a number of 20+ mile drives, so lean.

    Maybe.. just a random thought. If injectors are putting out more of a stream of fuel it could be washing down the side of piston/rings perhaps before it can burn, resulting in some fuel in oil? just a thought....

    I'll be changing my oil next month.. so will take another sample and see what it shows.

    You need a substantial amount of excess fueling for any of it to stay in liquid phase that far into the process.

    +2% is really "nothing". The ECM is making a minor positive correction in order to achieve the desired reading from the Air-Fuel ratio sensor.

    So long as things are even from cylinder to cylinder, and the A/F sensor isn't lying, then the out gases from the tailpipe should be the same if you have 0% FT vs +10 FT.

    Anything you spend in trying to "fix" this will far exceed any possible "gains".

    If fuel trims went beyond +/- 10%, then maybe I would look into it. It would also matter to me if fuel trims were more than a few % different from idle to accel to cruise.

    stft varies a lot.. bounces between -/+ %20 depending on accelerating and such.

    right, I get that. I'm glad it's a low %... makes me feel better about the %fuel in oil that was sampled.
    Will be changing oil again within a month... will do another sample and post.
