I have a coolant leak in my 2008 Prius. I have attached the picture and am hoping someone can tell me what the coolant is leaking out from because I am unsure. It is from the area that the water pump bolts into.

Is this the engine block itself? Or some other part that can be removed.

You can clearly see that the coolant is leaking out from the seal of those two metals.

    Thank you. 20240408_163206.jpg

It looks like it's coming from a hose or a fitting above the water pump like near the intake or at the very front of the motor One of those hoses may be the problem Just run your hand under them and see doesn't look like anything's coming out the weep hole at the bottom of the water pump which would indicate the water pump is bad.

Well, you have a bit of residue from (minor?) coolant seepage - between part of the timing cover and the engine block. It's a fair bit of work to remove and reseal that.

Unless you see coolant drips on the driveway, then I might suggest just checking the level in the radiator every 2 weeks (when the car is cold) and see how much it leaks.

Or take it to a shop with a "pressure tester". That's a pump that connects to the radiator and pressurizes the system so you can look for any leaks.

Unfortunately it is not coming from a hose or the water pump (which is brand new). It is being pushed out exactly where you see it, between those pieces of metal.

It loses about 2Tablespoons of coolant for every 100 miles I drive, but it has been getting worse. I'm worried that this minor seepage is going to turn into a full blown leak very soon.

No that'll probably never turn into a full-blown leaker. Most wouldn't do anything about it and if you do you'll be ripping apart most of the time and cover and that'll put a stop to most of that work getting done. The one NZ is a very stout little engine unless it can pump that cooling out and run dry you've got no worries technically I mean it's easy to worry yourself to death but this is not it and good luck not that you'll need it I'm just saying these cars usually will carry you until you're tired of being carried.

I was assume whatever was specified in the manual.

Well You can always give every nut and or bolt a little oomph and call it done may or may not do anything it may help if it was extremely loose to begin with which if it's anything like I find spark plugs in these things you may well have some loose bolts but generally that's not the case on the engines they're generally done correctly unless the pump has been redone and somebody used the lower end of the torque scale or something I guess it's possible give it a whirl if you're so inclined but like I say I wouldn't worry a thing about it You're not losing anything worth talking about If it gets any worse in the summer then maybe you'll have to do something but I don't think so these cars are not common to this The water pumps do go out usually they week from the weep hole one replaces the pump and that's it The other pieces of the timing cover generally don't come into play like this normally so there's always that some people on here have had nine of these cars we've had four and not really seeing any of this.
