Heads up for 2013-14 MOT - owners of Prius in the UK the mot test now states to check your steering lock (where fitted) and its a fail if it doesn't work.

Many garages are not sure if it actually has a lock so may fail it assuming it does. It does not lock so just keep an eye out.

Hi Dave, just had mine tested last week and the test guy mentioned this. He also said there were a list of vehicles it did not apply to.
Vehicles that have to be put in reverse before the key can be removed, those where the seat back flips forwards and covers the steering wheel, auto cars that have to be in "park" before the key can be removed, and those with electronic starting systems "keyless". He said it basically only covers cars where the original anti theft device was the steering locked with the key removed.
It would make more sense if the car was tested to make sure you can steer the car with the key turned off with it still in the slot. There were many reports when this system was first introduced of people turning of there engines to save fuel "coasting" coming to a bend and the car going strait on. Once the steering was turned slightly the key could not be turned back on. The reason why on many cars you had to rock the steering slightly to turn it on.
There are going to be those over zealous testers that will fail anything if they can with no common sense.
