Instrument Cluster Randomly Shuts Off

I had similar combination meter blank out events every 2-3 months for a couple of years. Eventually I paid $150 and repaired it. No more issues for several years now.

 

Biggest hassle with this problem is that it is intermittent... I've been meaning to fix mine for like 4 years because it's shows up as a problem once a year and goes away before I get the replacement part.

If you have to get your car ready for inspection, you can't procrastinate anymore! Just pull it out of your dash and solder the new capacitor on. You or a friend or family member will have no problem getting this done in a few hours time.

 

My '09 is this way If I open the door and don't see the door open red signal I know I don't have a display sometimes it's opening the door a couple of times the display lights up the red door open signal when it does and I just sit in the car and push the button and I know I'm going to have a display

 

That's how it first shows up, just here or there. It will get more frequent.

You can futz with it all you want, but I got tired of the games and no dash function real quick and "just" fixed it. (Plus inspection requires a working odometer).

Cheapest option is to have the soldering skills and tools (or know someone who does) to replace the capacitor on the circuit board.

Getting a used CM is possible but you'd be stuck with the odometer reading from the donor car, and who knows if the cap on the replacement is good?

The dash comes out really easy It's the air conditioning vents that are the problem with this job they break You can be extremely careful and they still break the sun has eaten up the plastic over the years just sitting. I can have the dash top off in about 30 minutes then when it's flipped over on top of your trash can right outside of the car or on your shop table It's another 20 minutes to get the computer board out that you're wanting to change or the CM monitor board No breaking things there then when you go back with the new I always pull the speaker off the back of this board just to get rid of it If you were so inclined you could make a set of wires that run from the beeper board and put the beeper where you could access it with a switch on it this would be extreme overkill but to some this would be quite normal I like my car to be quiet I don't care about all these noises that are constantly going on because well whatever reason that's why I have lights I don't need the break actuator to be beeping to tell me that it has no accumulator pressure along with all the orange lights on the dash I would rather the car be quiet I see the problem I don't need to hear it same with all the beats and nonsense for the seat belts and everything else My car is completely silent all the time forever with that speaker removed from the board but that may not be for every person with a car.

 

If you do not have the correct soldering equipment for electronic circuit board repairs, or full confidence in your soldering skills, you are 50/50 that you're going to damage the board more than repair it. Although a DIYer myself, I've seen and had to fix WAY too many DIY repairs where someone thought they were just going to follow a youtube video. It's not always that easy. Some jobs do actually take knowledge, experience and skill to be performed correctly. Having been an Electronics tech in the military for 13 years, including going through ET C7 and microminiature repair schools, I can say circuit board repair is one of those things. There's a reason schooling makes you do hundreds of circuit board repairs, at a work bench, under ideal conditions and then being inspected for perfection. It gives you a fighting chance of doing it "good enough" under non-ideal conditions. Trust me, 99% of the CM repairs out there are hack jobs and wouldn't pass even a basic soldering quality inspection.
