My 2008 recently lost its instrument display but I looked on YouTube and did the fix suggested. Instruments came back but I really haven't driven it since. Now, there seems to be an excessive current draw. Could these two issues be related. Any hints on diagnosis or repair are appreciated. I'm sure I can find a new cluster locally in the junkyard if that would be a likely fix.

try pulling the fuse that runs the combo meter to see if that is causing the excess draw. if not, you'll have to go through all the fuses one by one.

You might have to pull the dash four or five times going to the junkyard getting the CM monitor display your speedometer and gas gauge and transmission position so unless you're prepared to do this a few times it may be actually cheaper to buy the rebuilt unit from Texas hybrids and change it out once during the time you have the car probably the rest of the car's life but such as life. Every time you go to remove the CM monitor display all the vents have to come out of the dash and they break easily and people try to sell them for real money. You do realize you can buy them in the aftermarket out of better plastic for about $88 for the set of four

I will definitely check into the rebuilt unit mentioned.

Car starts but CM display may or may not be blanked out and Power Button is not illuminated when I'm thinking it should have a green light (On in Ready Mode). It does illuminate in yellow as appropriate. No power train codes or Toyota codes detected by Innova 3100RS scanner. I don't have TechStream. The car intermittently fails to start. Matt from Texas Hybrids said that a freshly charged or new 12v battery can make a failing CM even more finicky.

Is TechStream required to read the B1271 code? Matt said the rebuilt CM is 150 which includes shipping and return packaging for the core/failed part so that's probably where I'm headed.

In all the cars I've had I've never had the CM monitor 1271 code until a silver $700 thing I bought in Raleigh I scanned the vehicle and I was shocked I didn't even know the code existed in like looked at it and was like oh geez this is telling me the thing is bad and of course there was no display I hadn't even tried to move the ground or play the games or do anything and then any of my other cars I never had this code so I always move the ground got it running and left it until I found a replacement unit for the dash or ordered one from Texas The one on my daily driver is from Texas and it's flawless.

No, any good scanner that can read all ECUs should work fine.

I did order the rebuilt from Texas Hybrids so that should be here in a day or two.
