I have a replacement TPMS from eBay that looks like good quality. Using Techstream I input the 7 digit code 5456266 shown below successfully, but after turning car on and off few times I get no reading in Techsteam showing temperature or pressure in ID.4 which does show the number I input. Hope it is the right number. Wondering if it actually has to be under pressure to activate?

These are not the factory branded Pacific manufactured TPMS sensor so I can't tell you there should be instructions that came with the TPMS sensors sometimes you have to fill the tires half full briefly and then fill them up all the way or some kind of nonsense like that to get the things to start working so maybe you should look that up maybe with your camera that little scan code thing on there will tell you all that information and then everything should start to work All I care about is the light going off I don't care about reading all the temperatures and all that business and the Toyota software I just want the light to go off on the dash I checked my tires more regularly or everyday for the most part so there's always that.

Thanks Tombuk2! That's kind of what I figured, and waiting to hear from eBay seller. I am not savvy about the code and instructions so will try that. There were some instructions on the seller's listing but mostly on installation. Thanks for the good advice!

So, for a TPMS sensor to work (display data on a scantool and be capable of turning the light off), you need several things.

The sensor has to be "correct" for the car - year make and model. The ID number has to be programmed into the ecu. The sensor has to be in range when it transmits data.

The sensor will transmit maybe once every 10 (?) minutes when stationary. If it's spinning on a wheel fast enough (has an accelerometer) it'll transmit about once a minute.

If there's a sudden change in pressure, the sensor will transmit. Or use a special TPMS tool that can "ping" the sensor & it will respond. (Very useful as you can see if the sensor is correct YMM).

I think it is more likely the 10-digit (hexadecimal) number:

Thanks, most things point to the 7 digit code, but I will try the other too as you suggest. Nothing to lose. Current understanding is that it needs to be pressured up to activate which I'll try after that. :)

... and you need to drive the car for 20 mins or so to activate the transmitter.

I started having intermittent trouble with one of my TPMS sensors for my Gen 3. It was a PITA because it would fail when a winter storm hit, but be back to normal by the time I got to where it could be read.

I went to more than one tire store and got some pretty sketchy answers to my questions. They only had aftermarket sensors, where they programmed their sensors to the OEM IDs, but they didn't have any in stock for some reason. They didn't have the scantool to read the codes out of the car's TPMS system.

I finally got to a tire store on a day cold enough to have the problems. They had a tool to read from the tires (not the car), and they had trouble reading from the right front. They also gave me some sketchy explanation about being a duplicate ID (which they said was probably an attempt at tricking the car by putting in the same ID for two wheels. This didn't make sense because they read from the tires, not the car. I think their scanner was picking up the signal from one of the other tires when they were trying to read from the problem sensor. Like I said, sketchy answers.)

I picked up a set of the OEM sensors (off of the internet) and borrowed a friend's scantool (which has enough features to program the IDs into the car). I laid the new sensors out next to the tires, then entered the IDs into the car. I only pulled the sensors out of the boxes to read the IDs, put them back into the boxes before setting each one next to a tire. The scantool showed each one was talking, read about 0 PSI, and what seemed like a valid temperature for the day. That's when I went to the tire store (also changed over to the winter tires).

No problems in the 9 months or so since I did that. Just my experience with those sensors for what it's worth.

Very interesting account Danno5060 and informative. Your last step that was successful was what I was attempting, but no reading. The new TPMS is not OEM. Could be a problem. I will go ahead and mount one and try it though with pressure, and if no success then will have to get the OEM although a good bit more expensive. Thanks for taking time to tell the success story!!

FWIW, I think @dolj is right. I'd try the other ID.

My experience was also on a Gen 3, not a Gen 2. I don't think it would matter, but it could.

When you do this if you do it again by the Pacific branded green label on the logo not the red sensors those are what came on the car and you'll have the best shot at making them work because that's what was there in the first place If you look at yours when you take your factory originals out look at the back of your center caps see the word Pacific they make all the tire and wheel trim and the TPMS sensors I buy them all the time. Some instructions for aftermarket sensors including filling the tire up to 20 lb and letting it sit for a minute and then push it up to the full PSI supposedly to make the sensors turn on or something along those lines. There are tire scan tools out there that can be had for as little as $25 if you get the Toyota one I do believe it will strike up a relearn with the computer that's in the car and make it recognize the sensor pretty much just by looking for it and it being on.

Every TPMS sensor I've worked with has either a 8 digit hexadecimal ID code, or a 10 digit decimal code (that can be translated to a 8 digit hex).

Toyota likes using a 7 digit hex code - my TPMS tool will display a 0 in front of it for 8 digits. If I recall correctly, using a scantool to enter the ID codes will only allow 7 digit entry.

SUCCESS! Thank you everyone for the helpful advice! Bottom line is that the TPMS must be pressured up to activate. As soon as it hit the 33 psi for rear tire Techstream registered. The 7 digit code was the correct code. Naturally I dropped the new TPMS into the tire. Haha Had to go through gymnastics and use a piece of stiff wire and duct tape to fish it out. My valve removal tool was out of reach, but on second try I screwed it onto the stem so I could pull the unit up to fit. Torqued at 35 inch lbs or 3 ft lbs. Weighed the original and both new and old were 36 grams so no change in wheel balance.

I used a 6 inch scrap of 2x4 and a 3 ft 2x4 as lever to break the tire since I don't have machine or tool. Worked fine. Thanks Youtubers for that idea. Now will order 3 more of the TPMS units. Really was not so bad or time consuming other than the fishing part.

Thanks again everyone! PS I would have added this update in original post to save others reading, but did not see option to edit the OP.

At your own risk I provide her info on the eBay listing, but there were similar on Amz too with gen 2 Prius owners giving 5 star
