This is what you dont realize yet...

leaving the seat and going that route, over time the seat back begins to fold lower into the seat bottom. Eventually, you will not have the same level of sleeping area as you started with... but I think this is what you are referring to.. also.. stay away from wood! it breaks and can collect moisture from the are which then creates mold.

Did you see how easy it is to remove the seat and all of the extra storage room you gain by removing the seat then replacing it with a light weight metal platform?

Not sure what you mean by "front seat in the down position?"

My approach is different than most. I take the head rest off the front seat, push the seat all the way FORWARD, then recline the seat back all the way BACK.

When you do that, the front seat back will be level with the rear seat cushion.

I then put a one drawer unit which opens out the door (although anything about one foot tall would work). The top of the drawer unit (or whatever box you wanted to use) is level with the folded rear seat.

Plywood piece goes on top, creating a "bed" space of over 10 feet, from the glove box to the tailgate.

Most people push the seat up, not back. My way gives MUCH more space for the bed. Plus the car stays 100% stock.
