My 2006 MFD is so dim now that it's barely visible in the daylight. It works fine however. It's the one with all the options...maps, camera, etc. What are my options? I see the digital touchscreen is available on Amazon but I assume that doesn't provide the backlight?

I had to replace the combo meter capacitor in our '05, so I figured I might as well replace the MFD while I had the dash torn apart. I'd been living with the washed out display for a couple of years, but I found a decent used one on eBay for $200 that came out of an '09 model. The seller posted numerous photos showing the unit from all sides, including the serial number label and shots of the display in every possible mode.

Fortunately, my unit arrived in good condition and was exactly as advertised. As with any used, online purchase, though, you should do your due diligence before purchasing. I contacted the seller to verify that the unit I'd be receiving was the same S/N as shown in the photos, and indeed it was. My Prius is a basic model without nav, so the correct MFD for this car was the 86110-47081. I'd expect the higher-end unit for models with camera & nav to be more expensive. My before & after photos are attached.

They don't return calls or emails so maybe no longer in business. :(

Another source is Autobeyours.com in Southern Indiana. Reliable parts source and offers MFD repair services at a reasonable price.

Yep, I get notifications from the local yards and they got one yesterday. Looked good in pictures, but when I got there is was bad-touch screen was peeling. They are more like $85 here btw. Met a nice local guy who was pulling the brake pump from it also.

My MFD went out. I sent it in to autobeyours using the recommended USPS flat rate shipping of $30. After two weeks and no follow-up after payment I emailed, then called, and called again. Finally I got in touch with someone and they said they couldn't fix it. They offered to refund the $325 and optionally return the broken MFD. I got the $ back, declined getting the broken MFD shipped back, but was out the shipping.

I ended up buying the same part # on ebay for $250 from a seller with good reviews (there were many) with free shipping and 30 day warranty. Not a year warranty but the ebay route was pretty painless.

I have a 2006 Prius. My local Toyota dealer says that if I purchase a remanufactured MFD (vs. repairing mine), I will have to purchase an updated Nav DVD for $300. Has anyone replaced the MFD in their Prius and had to purchase the nav DVD for it to work? Thanks.

I’m no expert but that doesn’t seem right. All of the repair videos and websites don’t mention having to replace the nav DVD. Trying searching for this common repair and see if there are ~any~ hits. I just replaced my MFD with one off of eBay with the matching part number. But I was told by autobeyours that all models with back-up cameras are compatible with MFDs with a blue socket. I can’t vouch for that but they should be experts.

Also it appears some different model number MFDs are compatible with the same vehicle. For me I just wanted to be done with it and ordered one with the same part number. Mine was $260 which seemed to be an average price for a used MFD with that part number , with a warranty (30 days), and sold by someone with good reviews. If I hunted more or waited I could have probably found one for less.

At best your dealer is confused or mistaken. At worst they are trying to take you for a ride.

I just bought a new Screen from Germanautotech for $300. Then I pulled the MFD unit apart and replaced the screen and the digitizer as one piece. With brand new I don't have to worry about another old one fading and I added the cost to the car piece when I sold it. New owner was very happy with that.
