"but unlike the 'vid ..." There are readers here who believe the same thing. This is mostly harmless if it does not inhibit responses to later inevitable zooinotic jumps.

Driving home, I sampled FM radio and learned about "Dr Kelly." She was interviewed by an anti-vac, right-wing host and you have to go to the tobacco bans that I've heard such nonsense. Very glib but very 'sounds good' but lying claims, she is likely to play a larger role in the anti-vax efforts.

H5 bird flu might be the next big thing or it may fizzle. While we wait to know you might read:

    https://www.healthaffairs.org/doi/10.1377/hlthaff.2024.00038

Suggesting that COVID infection testing in US was less than optimal. Suggesting also other unhappiness. The big thing is to recognize that humans and our food-animal fleet are excellent viral targets, and that our defense should be based on science. We all want less deaths from these next ones, am I right? So, do ... what?

A good question. We were completely unprepared for Covid, and I can only assume the same for the next.
Vote everyone out and start over?

We had some respectable preparations for pandemics, starting 30 years earlier and expanded multiple times. But a significant chunk of that was dismantled in the two years prior to this Pandemic.

From the results no one in the world was prepared for that pandemic I don't think they could have been.

All in all the US did okay and was a leader in many regards, even helping other countries.

Hopefully the USA learned from the Pandemic for their opportunities for improvement and their opportunities to build on our strengths.

The USA and some other countries had a more difficult path to walk due to the emphasis on individual freedoms as compared to say some countries that could weld peoples' apartment doors shut or dispose of individuals that didn't toe the line on public policy.

I saw a lot of opportunities for improvement but many things that were done right.

Maybe the biggest problem I witnessed was some fellow citizens disregard for their neighbor's health and community standards to protect each other. That is not the government but people who just have a callous disregard for others.

The entire pandemic was a learning exercise where no one really knew at the time what was 'right' in an evolving situation.

A large part of a person's perception could be based on where they lived during the pandemic.
Early on in the pandemic our Govenor had a public address where he stated he could care less about politics and was doing exactly what the States Medical Director was recommending and would be following the Medical recommendation for all state criteria regardless of what politicians or parties may think. It seemed to work out very well for him and our states population. He is a Democratic Govenor in a Republican State with a Republican Senate and, Republican Houses within a state and population dominated by the Republican Party. Recently even though he was a Democrat Candidate running against a strong Republican Candidate in a Republican dominated state he won the Governorship by an overwhelming majority of the state vote and was reelected - in a large part due to how he handled the pandemic.

So you didn't like being ordered to stay home for weeks at a time? Or bringing your kids/grand-kids to the local playground, outside, to find it closed? Or going to the grocery store (one of the only places open) and finding one-way-only arrows on the floor of the aisles? Or seeing thousands of health-care providers and teachers and military members lose their jobs because they refused the jab?

The Wuhan Flu was proof that the government isn't the solution to anything but trained physicians, especially Infectious disease specialists and Virologists are. The entire notion of "6-feet of separation" was just made up by Fausi and the mandatory "vaccinations" were not based on any science, just power-hungry politicians who love ordering people around. Who can forget the Governor of Michigan walking through a grocery store and saying what people can and can't purchase?

America is, still, the land of the free and home of the brave so NEVER AGAIN to letting government bureaucrats running our lives like that...they caused a LOT more harm than good. And there should be CRIMINAL charges against Governors who forced nursing homes to accept patients who were infected with Covid...that actually killed a LOT of our Seniors who were the most vulnerable.

Oh, there's a vaccine, now, for Bird Flu? Not a chance, pal....don't even try selling that garbage to me big pharma who's always looking to make billions of dollars of our sicknesses (but never actually "curing" anything at all).

John Bolton bragged about shutting down that department before the pandemic. Fortunately, the ground work had already been done during the HIV crisis. So though the office was shutdown, we had the tools needed to restart effective actions.

The sad part, is that office maintained an inventory of masks, protective gear, and logistics that was gone when Covid arrived.

    From Wiki:

The Huffington Post reported that on May 8, 2018, Bolton removed Timothy Ziemer and dissolved his Global Health Security team formerly on the NSC leaving the administration's high level preparation for and ability to respond to pandemics, infectious disease, and other biological threats unclear.[160] The choice to remove and not replace Ziemer in the midst of an emerging Ebola outbreak in The Democratic Republic of Congo was criticized in several news outlets.[160][161][162][163]

If another pandemic hits, lab leaker or natural, hopefully no one's going to scream "xenophobic!" - just to get their political Jabs in.

I think just the replies in this thread in the last couple of days would reveal how unmanageable this pandemic was and how diverse human reactions are.

There would be some who still consider vaccines a government plot, think Dr. Fauci should be burned at the stake and masks serve no purpose.

Imagine being a public official and having to deal with the constant barrage of assorted lunatics that now inhabit our country, then add on an entitled attitude toward life and then just for an additional dose of fun people who see every event in life as some sort of political conspiracy from the other side of the aisle - no matter where you might be sitting

The problem isn't Scientist, Science, Government, or Current/Past Politicians - the problem is us.
