Time to play “What’s that sound?”

Been brutally hot & humid here in the northeast. It’s called late spring lol. My A/C has been running almost round-the-clock 24/7 - as it usually is - because heat of any kind makes me physically sick.

Two unusual (and new) noises have appeared out of the blue in the past few weeks, which seems to have coincided with this brutal hot stretch.

First, it was a continuous tapping sound, like someone was tapping a pencil on a desk. Definitely loud enough to hear and be annoying, but not blow your ears off volume. That seems to go away when the a/c is turned off. However…

A newer noise has emerged over the past few days. It’s a pulsating servo motor type of sound. Again, DEFINITELY audible while in the car, and highly annoying. It too comes and goes, and will usually stop a few minutes after the a/c is shut.

Both noises aren’t happening each second of the day. They come and go.

To be clear, the a/c (thankfully) is still working fine. But these mystery noises have me a bit concerned since I never heard them in the 2 years I’ve had the car.

I’m assuming it has something to do with the a/c system being under a heavy load with this heat, though, that’s only a guess.

I attached a short clip where you can hear the servo noise. You might have to listen closely however, as my phone didn’t capture the audio the best. You should surely hear it though.

So, could this mean that the a/c system is starting to break down, or just weird quirks from overtaxed a/c?

Yeah that sounds pretty wild you'd have to be able to track that down You should be able to look at that sound and be able to figure out where it's coming from inside the car I know it's probably inside the dash probably down near where your feet might be if you're driving or your gas pedal foot would be there are a couple servos down in that area that move damper doors in the like but I wouldn't think they would be moving that rapidly usually it's a slower click click click click sound I haven't recorded one myself but I have a car that does this but it's not that annoying it does eventually stop.

Maybe you can unzip the video in this thread and see if the sound could be related (and also watch the video to see what you could look for if you stick your head down where your feet go and look up).

There are three of these little servos on the heater, two on one side and one on the other (might be harder to see)—if I remember right, and the locations change in different Prius gens.

Gen 1 and gen 2 were prone to that 'hunting' behavior, which might be fixable just with cleaning, not even replacement, if caught before the traces wear clean through.
