I have a 2009 Prius that has seen better days.
An entire year ago one dealership told me I had bad gas and should have them drop and scrub my tank. (They wanted $1099!)
Fast forward a year and countless amounts of money and I'm at home with it again. I'm almost ready to drop my tank but I am having trouble finding out whether it is wise, or even possible to clean because all of the posts I have found are just about replacement.

Is it possible to Clean and scrub the Prius tank and replace it?
    Any helpful info or links?
    .
    Thank you so much.

Please help me save myself from myself.

Probably not It has a bladder in it kind of like a well tank or a pressure control water tank with a bladder It's very similar You can't replace the fuel pump or the sending unit generally when the tank is fubar it gets replaced New ones are expensive 16, 1800. ones out of other cars are well questionable at Best. So cleaning is probably not an option trying to find a tank out of a matrix or a Yaris or a vibe or something like that seems like it may be a much better thing I don't know I haven't had time to fool with it yet I'm sure I'm going to see soon.

When was the last time this car ran?

No, you cannot "scrub" the inside of the fuel tank. A US-spec Gen2 Prius has a fuel bladder inside a sealed tank assembly.

If you have old (stale) gas then the best you can do is to pump it out. You need to disconnect the pressure line -under the car, or at the fuel rail. Then hook some kind of hose to the fuel line. Jumper power to the pump or use a capable scantool to activate the pump. If the pump works then collect the discharged fuel and safely dispose of it.

(It is really difficult to get a hose or tube down the filler to reach the bladder).

Tom is right, he doesn't know. There have been a few people who have tried to replace the Prius tank with something else but with no success.

A secondhand tank from a low-mileage donor car is the best budget option.

Haven't seen their write-ups what was the problem not that the tank didn't fit they couldn't get the purge valve and all that to work? I'm in NASCAR country I could drop a fuel cell in the back hatch if I wanted to they even make bladder type that are approved and legal not my cup of tea but still. I would be interested knowing and what the problem was literal fit in the space or couldn't get it to actuate and work.

No from what I see there's a couple of post here that you've posted in also about this issue there was some discussion about the fuel tank and the bladder and all of that but I don't see where anybody's done anything even the guy in Chicago or Indiana with the junkyard full of Prius because nobody's really had a serious problem yet I don't even know what that would be. I know that you can probably mount an external fuel pump and pull through the tanks internal fuel pump to get fuel out of the tank and run the engine if the fuel pump died I've done this on a myriad of other in tank electric fuel pump vehicles in the '80s and '90s when the pumps were prohibitively expensive You could just pull through the dead pump in the tank Toyota pumps like in AE86s that has no bearing here but no matter so I really don't see where anybody has attempted to replace the Prius fuel tank with anything else discussions about thinking about it and then people come and say you'll just get used to filling the bladder Don't worry about it. Someone is also mentioning that they believe anything not North American federal spec will be the bladderless tank if that was to be Canada which I don't think that's how it works that would be cool because that's right up the road. Hell even getting a gas tank sent in on a ship from NZ or the UK be okay with me realizing that a new tank here in the States is 1300 plus dollars so if I paid $200 for the tank in in the UK and 500 to have it sent here be no problem to me and I'm sure there would be a way to get the pressure sensor fooled and what have you that the computers looking for We could create the pressures that the sensor needs to see I would imagine they've done it on a lot more complicated things over on Toyota mods for the last 25 years hell the last 35 now just Toyota mods is not dedicated to high gas mileage endeavors generally speaking they're a little more about getting their right engine in the right chassis and keeping it for other reasons than hundred miles to the gallon contest.
