Most fuel efficient 2023 Prius record

Be careful, I choose the one with 38 mm offset (40 mm for Toyota one), titanium and aero with 66.1 bore (19.4 lbs). Recently, I got 65.34 mi/gal (3.6 l/100 km) with these wheels with a Prius Limited AWD mostly at 62.14 mi/h (100 km/h).

 

Say what?
Then what's the purpose of buying +$2000 'aero wheels' if there's no 'pay back' ever?

 

I am in Canada and, by law, we must have winter tires. I always buy a second set of wheels for winter tire to switch them myself.

 

Isn't that specific to a single province? I had understood another province, closest to me, to require them only on certain mountain highways. And was aware of no similar requirements in between.

 

It is in Quebec province. These 17 inch wheels are more confortable than 19 inch wheels on rough roads even if i inflate them at 42/40 psi for fuel efficiency (Recommended pressure for 17 inch wheels: 36/35 psi and for 19 inch wheels: 35/33 psi).

 

I'm definitely looking at those wheels right now. I think they are the prettiest "aero" wheels right now. Problem is, i wanted some nice 215 tires next and i don't know how well they fit on a 6.5 wheel...

These Wheels and 195/60R17 tires are exactly what you need to be fuel efficient and confortable: Narrow and aerodynamic. Larger wheels and tires increase drag and dangerous floating on wet road!

 

Where is the breakeven point of buying new wheels and tires to get better mpg?
If I spent 2k on wheels and tires, and go from 50 mpg to 54 mpg and assume I drive 20k(!!) miles per year...I would save 30 gallons of gas each year. It would take 20ish years for payback at my current gas price. (40 years if 10kmiles a year)

If you buy stuff, buy it because you like it, not because 'it gets me better mpg'.....the numbers rarely make sense.

But if you spend a quarter of that on steel wheels and 'baby moon' style wheel covers (which are way more aero than the pictured wheels above),
And the skinny LRR tires that fit the car's minimum sizing,,, then the pay back may only be 5 years.

However for many of us a Winter Wheelset is more important.

But for many of us ladies, STYLE is the most important feature...

 

Perhaps! But here we have to put winter tires by law.. If i'm to put those wheels on my car and keep the stock wheels for the winter tires, they're going to be paid for themselves in 4 years! So if i'm going to do that, might as well take the most efficient route!

 

Wouldn't that be Steelies for the winter tires and the stock wheels with the stock wheel covers (which are probably just as aero as the 2k wheels) as your summer set be the most efficient use of money?

I got my steel Winter Wheel set from that big online place, Mich IceX installed, balanced, with TPMS, ready to swap onto the car for $800, delivered to my door.

You could pop on some wheel covers on the steelies, if you like, for ~$40 and add to the aero of your winter set, and not shed a tear if you happen to slide into a curb someday.

 

Well, i can have those wheels for 195$ each at work... Prettier, functional wheels during summer and stock, solid wheels for winter for the price of steelies and wheel caps..

Great video. Have you ever been pulled over for not having two side mirrors? Aptera was planning on designing a car with only cameras and no exterior mirrors. They had to scrap that idea due to current US laws and regulations that did not appear like they would change any time soon. I believe Oregan law requires two side mirrors for class a and b vehichles.

 

That's great news. California requires a driver side mirror. Glad to hear you haven't been pulled over in Washington where the law appears to be the same as California. The Aptera's design (if it ever becomes available) does allow you to easily remove the mirrors. Sounds like that would be the thing to do in Oregon.
