Maybe not a high-school-diploma career path.

    Hahah most certainly not!

"Tribology is the science and engineering of understanding friction, lubrication and wear phenomena for interacting surfaces in relative motion. It is highly interdisciplinary, drawing on many academic fields, including physics, chemistry, materials science, mathematics, biology and engineering."

    ...tribologist are walking brains!

When I was in the drafting office of a smallish fabricator, my business card said "Checker". Then went back to a consulting engineering firm (one I'd been with years previous, under new management), my title was something like (actual terminology eludes me now...): "Senior Technical Consultant". Some horseshit like that.

The litmus test: if someone asks you what you do, you trot out the latter, you'll get puzzled looks.

Interesting. He studied advertising but got STLE—Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers—certifications.

Tribology is a very complicated subject though. There are professor who dedicate their life on tribology research.

Did y'all ever wonder why medical doctors end up at certain fun jobs like proctologist, urologists, or forensics? My co-worker's daughter just graduated medical school and the type of specialty you get into is very cut-throat...you have to send out your resume all over the place, and hospitals that have openings make lists of candidates and you have to interview to get a residency. So you may have a choice of waiting or going into something like proctology or forensics.... especially if you have a large amount of student loan over your head.
