What car would you get if your Gen3 died today?

    My wife bought a 2024 camry hybrid that’s an absolute pleasure to drive. Tons of power, super smooth on the interstate, and extremely comfortable on long distances.

    I won’t give up on my 2012 Prius till it gives up on me though. I wouldn’t replace the hv battery, head gasket, or brake booster if they ever decide to give out. Just doesn’t make financial sense on a 12 year old car with 200k miles.

    (Yes I know our car is not a 3rd generation Prius, but the c is mostly 3rd generation tech applied to the smaller 2nd generation engine)

    I have never owned a G3.

    If I did and if it did die it would be replaced with a Subaru Outback. Large enough for my protection/attack dogs :p, great traction and most importantly, one of the safest cars in the world for the price.

    BTW; my nephew has a 2023 Camry Night Shade and loves it.

    I totalled my 2014 Plug-in Prius last year after 185,000 miles. I work from home now so was looking for a fun, small EV. I found a good deal on a 2018 BMW i3 Range Extender which has been great.

    My three misgivings? The doors require the front to open before the back door opens, although most of my driving is with 2 people and the back seat is rarely used.

    Second? Man, I miss the range of a Prius. With a light foot I could get 450+ miles on a tank. The BMW gets around 120-130 on EV and another 80 on the range extender. The state of public chargers is hit-and-miss, just this week I wanted to top off from a 200 mile round-trip. The chargers in the parking lot where I paid were unavailable due to construction. On the way home, one location was completely offline, the next had 2 chargers that looked OK but wouldn't scan credit cards.

    With my Prius, I'd barely have used half a tank. :)

    Thirdly, the tires are an odd size, and the fronts and backs are different sizes. That means no tire rotation, and vendor lock-in. Tires are around $250 and are purported to last around 30K miles. Luckily, my car has 18K miles and was a fleet car for the dealer. It looks like they replaced the tires before selling it based on the date codes and tread.

    I'm driving more now than when I got the i3. I'm keeping my eye out on Craigslist for a low-mileage Prius. I may bite if I find a Gen3 that looks good.
