It seems to me that when consecutive document numbers from a standards body end up having anything to do with each other, it's more of a happy accident. You could easily see a 14229 that was about diagnostic protocols, and a 14230 that was about refrigerated storage of bananas, or something.

My cable doesn't have the j standard printed on it or anything I've seen some of the red plugs have a Mylar piece of clear over white with numbers stamped in it with the j standard right on the plug whatever it is I don't know the numbers. But I see the numbers that you wrote and I believe my cable is the 18 whatever. It's red and then and then the flexible cord grip which is clear when the unit is plugged up and plugged up to my USB on my CF-19 when data starts to move that cord grip will start flashing and green and if I lose connection that cord grip at the bottom of the plug will flash red. That's all I do know

Good guess :) I took the time to look it up.

Turns out, 14229 is actually derived from part of 14230!
    • 14230 is aka KWP2000 and more, and deals with a variety of K-line details
    • 14229 is a bigger picture standard built on top of some parts of 14230 and other standards as well
Bottom line: they are related; one does NOT supercede the other.

gMost likely, at least under some circumstances, both may come into play. Keeping all this stuff both documented and properly implemented can be a Real Pain -- meaning, it's likely one would occasionally find bugs in ANY implementation.***
*** (Long ago, my first job out of college included being the Compliance Engineer for the first digital phone system... ensuring what we did was compliant with all appropriate standards over the past century or so (!). Such fun :)

Toyota is no longer making a reliable car. My 2010 Prius only has 120k but I already had the ABS traction lights on and also check hybrid and a burned out voltage ecu at the battery which makes the car completely dead and unmovable!!!

I am mad as hell with all these break down. Toyota reliability my a.!!!!!

You guys can discuss and argue all about legality of the Techstream software. I am buying the knock off dongle that comes with the software online to fix my car. The f. dealer wants over $200 just to air bleed and calibrate the ABS after I did all the hard work replacing the accumulator and brake booster already (costly too). I swear to myself I must have someway to see what will go bad ahead without suddenly breaking down like this and I have NO wheel.

The Techstream installed on my Macbook air virtual machine works and that is good enough for me. Now I have the full capability as any Toyota tech and no need to deal with their rip off charge at the dealer. Instead of dealer they should call themself stealer instead!!!!!!!

Buy the knock off or not then get on with it fixing the car people! Save a ton of money plus the feeling of NEVER afraid of what is going to break next and the expensive bill. This tool will help diagnose and repair myself big time!!!!!!!

Certainly true for a Gen3 Prius. Not true for 99% of the rest of their cars. Gen3 was a transition to make their hybrids lower cost to manufacture while at the same time adding power, mpg and features. They did all that at the cost of inverter, brake booster, oil burning, egr clogging and head gasket failures. They covered the first three for a period but those programs have expired on 2010-13 models and most later gen3s based on mileage alone. The inverters are still covered in part because of a class action suit.

Unfortunately the inverter and hg failures will occur suddenly regardless of Techstream. The hybrid battery should be expected but rarely causes a sudden stranding.

Actually much of its advanced features are being superseded by the new version which has no hack version. Specifically the ecu updates for the revised egr or any ecu update have been disabled.
