Nice to see that they're closer to shipping.

Though for that kind of money I'd prefer a restored/repowered Vanagon.

You'd probably get a restored one for that price, but an EV conversion could add another $85k to the price.

I probably should have clarified- I meant either a Subaru EJ or Ford Zetec re-power, both of which are pretty common in the Vanagon community these days.

Go with an old Porsche engine, and keep the air cooled charm.

I know of a shop that sold an adapter plate to do exactly that, but I could swear theirs was meant to put a watercooled Porsche into a watercooled Vanagon- I wouldn't know if the same plate would work for an aircooled Porsche engine, though I know the VW bellhousing stayed the same when they changed from air to water.

Ah, didn't realize there were water cooled ones.

"Porsche created a version called B32 in a limited edition. The van, based on the luxurious Carat model, was equipped with the 231 PS (170 kW) 3.2 liter Carrera engine and was originally developed to support Porsche's testing activities in Algeria. Ten of these were built, with some sold by Porsche to special customers, even having a Porsche VIN.[15] Porsche themselves also used the Porsche-engined bus to transport staff rapidly.[16] Top speed was around 135 mph (217 km/h), although Porsche only claimed 116 mph (187 km/h) to ensure that the numbers could be replicated with nine people in the car and with the air conditioning on full"

In South Africa, it had a 5 cylinder Audi engine.

At this point, you should be asking for a $20k ICE car.

My enthusiasm has wained. Without Full Self Driving, no other vehicle comes even close.

Aircooled 1980-1983.5 on the left with a single grille, watercooled 1983.5 and later with a second grille.

The T3 was born with an aircooled engine, but VW had baked a lot of flexibility into their late-70s designs. The T3/Vanagon always had a radiator support mount, space for fans and water pipes and heater core in the dash, even though they shipped it with an aircooled engine for the first 3.5 years.

Heck, a few of their platforms even allowed them the flexibility of having either front or rear engine pretty late into the design process.

As far as the IDBuzz goes? It gets me interested from a nostalgia standpoint, but that nostalgia is much better rewarded (at a similar price) with the actual classics.

If I'm looking at it as a family van, I'm much more impressed by the current Sienna.

Assembled outside the US means it doesn't qualify for the consumer credits here. Production might move here later. The commercial credits could mean good lease deals until then.

The Toyota is more practical. If you want a plug, the Pacifica will be a better option with the current infrastructure for families that do road trips.

The pricing for the IDBuzz is another data point that has convinced me that I do not want (to pay for the battery involved in) a long-range EV or PHEV.
I'd much sooner go for a short-range, quick charging "around town" car + rentals for the roadtrips.

There will now be a $250 fee in Pa for that around town EV. Which isn't too bad if it is big enough to haul a family, and gets plenty of miles. Too much for a small commuter though. Might push me to getting an Aptera reservation, as EV motorcycles are charged $50.
