If I change the box labeled "smart key" and the key fob that goes with it, will the car accept it and start? The doors unlock and lock. Are there more parts or modules that affect the starting of the car?

I don't think this is a battle you want to fight You have a box and a remote that match and you want to shove it in another car so you can start it and run it give it a whirl and see what happens. You might want to get a very capable scan tool that can get into the Toyota menus dealing with security locking unlocking and starting I wouldn't try this with an aftermarket scanner like a u t e l or anything like that there are other ways to make fobs work and cars and all that without having to change a whole bunch of electronic parts so you may have more parts to change than you realize and well this is a generation 3 You're going to start taking stuff apart not a good idea if the car is running well and you like it or whatever the heck run it out until it blows up or whatever and forget it these aren't keepers and this is not the car so use it up and be finished Don't get attached like to your wife or your dog with this model car

I had bought a car with no keys and since I have a prius salvage yard I had a prius same year totaled but had keys. Looks like it works, just drove it off the trailer. After lunch I will look at it again, thanks for the prompt response.

Yeah you should be able to look online and see where all your boxes are located that you need to change that should have the transponder chip recognition thing in it but it may not I don't know that much about the Gen 3 the antenna if there's an amplifier for the system which would work with any of the systems The only thing that I would think would change would be the whatever reads the transponder chip in the remote You need that to match the transponder chip in the fob so if you have those two things and they're plugged up in another car it may work I'm not sure if you will have to have the Toyota software to make everything communicate or it just will by default recognize everything and work I would think probably so.
