First time startup with death rattle yesterday. Got the car at 65,000 miles with no problems noted. Can you have death rattle under other conditions other than blown head gasket? Traded for this car after 2012 developed head gasket problems and don’t want to go through that again. Planned to change intake manifold at 100,000 and clean egr system. Should I go ahead and do it now? Please advise. Thanks

This has been our typical problem and two of them so I don't know man it's just one of those things funny how it doesn't happen a whole lot to the non-fxe non-hybrid version of this system.

it is possible to have the rattle and not be the head gasket, but if it continues, i would get a test done and watch the coolant carefully.
if you determine it is not the head gasket, now would be the perfect time to clean the egr circuit and possibly add an oil catch can
also, consider 5k oil changes and more frequent coolant testing/changes

I would definitely clean the intake manifold and the entire EGR circuit. While everything is taken apart, I would change out the spark plugs too, since there is easy access at this point.

Also check the carfax if the mileage on your car is actually genuine. Many used car buyers have bought cars with rolled back mileage and not know it.
