I got the head gasket changed at Gasket Masters, drove home, and everything has been good over a few trips in the few days since then. Thanks everyone here for your wisdom and input!

I made a new thread with the story, and to see what I should do next:

@Tideland Prius probably time to lock this one, thanks!

Did they change water pump & thermostat? Did they clean or replace the EGR system? Fuel Injectors? Just curious..that all needs to be done unless they are offering a tail light warranty.

The EGR system was on the list of items done, I asked and they said "Oh it's part of the normal thing we do, but yours was the cleanest we'd seen so we put it back as is" because I had thoroughly cleaned it a few thousand miles earlier. Other than that, no water pump, thermostat, or fuel injectors. This place seems to do two jobs only: head gasket and engine swap for Priuses. Read my report in the linked followup thread for more info on them. They offer a 1 year, unlimited mileage warranty on the head gasket only, which excludes obvious overheating or running out of oil.

I cleaned the fuel injectors a few months ago, they all seemed perfectly clean already. I'm thinking about the water pump and thermostat, which is why I started the new thread for my next steps.

Not replacing a water pump and thermostat for any headgasket job or engine swap is a dis-service to the customer. Whether they say they changed those or not, we don't offer any warranty if they are not. People put those junk OG aisin or Chinese water pumps off Amazon on and they regret it soon after. 1 year warranty on gasket lol...well duh, if you don't include the HVAC issues. That's a gimmick.

What’s OG? I believe Aisin WPT-190 is what Toyota’s using. Main issue is counterfeits? Amayama’s worked well for me so far, and that’s what they’re suggesting.

Original Gangsta...I didn't suspect you spoke that lingo :ROFLMAO: As long as the brand you buy has the thermal tape on the inside of the housing you're good. But AFAIK, only Toyota OEM pumps have that. Perhaps mistaken though. (y)
