So to start off, many thanks to all whom have posted here! I’ve been lurking for years. now to the issue.
I had the head gasket go on my ‘13 v(wagon), yay. Did all of that and it won’t start. Seems like it’s not firing. Traction bat turns over nice and fast but it just won’t start. Starting fluid no change. Replaced coils and plugs. Charged traction battery. Cleaned maf. I’ve redone the timing twice. What am I missing? I get the ready prompt on the dash. No codes pending just the permanent ones from before head gasket: random misfire cyl 1 mis etc. plus a 0343 cam pos sensor a high input…..(this why redid timing). But no pending codes. Any help appreciated. I feel like I am missing something like a plug or a hose but I’ve been over it so many times I can see it in my sleep and haven’t found anything.
    thanks in advance!

140k. Throttle body was pretty clean when I got in there. I soaked and brushed and soaked and brushed again. I can pull the intake apart again tomorrow.

Was the timing chain off the first time?

Some have had a pcv hose disconnected.

Timing chain was off twice. So far…..

    I’ll check the PVC too

Yep. First time missed that but for the Christmas tree of lights on the dash!

The hybrid battery switch reinstalled completely, needs to be flipped down and slid laterally?

Was the timing chain incorrectly installed (eg “off timing”) the first time?

Yes. Off one tooth. I had issues w the tensioner part. Now that I understand how it all works with the turn counterclockwise then clockwise, I heard it release and then ratchet out. Is there any way to know for certain via the crank mark and the cam sprocket(timing cover on valve cover off) marks? I haven’t noodled out a way to count 25 full links down to the crank sprocket mark yet!

Cleaned throttle body, and took off intake cleaned that too. Took off valve cover and found 2 rockers that had fallen off. They were able to slip back on without loosening the cam bridge….. I thought that’s weird. Read for a while on the interwebs and needs to pump up the hydraulic lifter(?). Turned engine by hand for a while and they did get so couldn’t knock them off when all the way closed. One was tight the other was just a little loose. Turned engine by hand for a while more no change. saw timing marks and they all lined up like the book pages(can’t see down into crank sprocket). Put back together everything. It ran for a little bit then stalled. Got codes p0300 p0301 p0302 p3190(poor power). Does timing being off set that code? Thoughts?

@ChapmanF may chime in. I think there’s a way to glimpse the registry mark at crankshaft, without timing chain cover removal.

Thanks that would be a huge help! Though in the mean time I’m taking off everything and redoing head gasket and all of that. At least I think so. Draining coolant now…..

There are threads where I and others have posted photos before, and also explained how the painted links are normally not on their marks except every Nth time around ... search for those.

And those certainly were helpful posts! I verified that when my chain had 9 outer link bars between what would be painted links that the marks up top were in the right places, and that the witness mark on crank pulley lined up at 0 degree mark outside the timing cover. I then took everything apart again. Timing was spot on with timing cover removed, counting down 25 outer links from the intake sprocket “marked” links to the “marked” link on the crank it was just where it was supposed to be. So I did something right! Then took head off…. I found two bent valves. The ones the rockers fell off of so mystery solved on those(definitely shouldn’t be able to happen). I tested all the other valves with oil soak and no leaks yet. New valves ordered and on way hopefully soon. Can’t really do much till they come so I’m cleaning up all the surfaces and getting ready to lap them in the second they come. Thanks for all the help so far. Here’s hoping that it all goes smoothly from here on out, and that I won’t have to post more issues.

It would seem the timing was significantly off at one time. Perhaps hand rotations during the first reassembly?

Yeah. I did bend them by hand turning I believe. All my fault. I learned a good lesson though!
