Your experience sounds similar to my journey, which is still underway. Here is a link to another thread which may answer your questions:

Replacing MFD a simple Plug & Play if exact same model number? | PriusChat

What I have learned is that there are three possible ways to repair or replace yourself. Parts that may be bad and need replacing are the thin clear glass touchscreen (aka the digitizer), and/or the LCD behind the touchscreen which actually produces the color images. There are YouTube videos that show the process to first remove part of the dash in order to remove the entire unit, and then more detailed videos to show removal and replacement of just the digitizer or just the LCD.

The company UpFix offers a video on how to remove the dash components and get the old unit out that I found be very helpful. I did it just to the point where I could verify the part number of my unit fairly easily. This company offers repair services, but I found the cost of repair was equal to or more than the cost of a used unit.

And, here's another video that also shows the process for not only removing the unit but for also replacing the digitizer.

The third option if you are a DIYer is simply buy a used unit WITH THE EXACT SAME PART NUMBER and replace your entire unit. This is the route I am taking.

Finding used units is easy ... getting replies from salvage yards is not so easy. I finally found units for sale on ebay from sellers with 100% positive feedback, who had an acceptable to me return and refund policy, and that had good pictures of the unit showing the screens energized and the part number. I made an offer for one that came out to just under $200 with shipping and tax. It is scheduled to arrive Monday.

    Good luck with yours!
