im very familiar about how and why and when the thermos pumps coolant, and i just never felt like dealing with it till now, but about a year ago. i noticed that the pump's sound changed (or i just noticed how it sounded)
when shutting off the car and the thermos pumps coolant into it, the sound it makes goes from a mid to high piched grinding noise, them back to the a low electric hum of the pump then back to the grinding sound. it can shift between the noises several times (like how a voice can crack).
im worried that a bearing may be messed up or something.
its a 2005 prius and its 2 years old. (15k miles)
this sound happens in cold and hot weather.
    any tips?
i have an oil change on monday, and im thinking i might just ask them to have a look at it.

It certainly can make a loud nasty noise when cycling when it's cold. But if it's doing it all the time it may be a bearing. There've been a handfull of reports of the thermos pump needing replacement. If your dealer is reluctant to cover it under warranty I'd enquire as to whether it's part of the emissions warranty since that's the entire purpose of it anyway.

When it's cold (and it doesn't have to be below freezing), it will make a higher pitch noise.

if it still does it when it's warm out, yes there's a problem.

    otherwise that's the norm.
