    Greetings

Approximately how much would a 4 YO Prius sell for (in percentage of original sticker) with 120K miles? Assume a private sale.

I've tried KBB but their estimator doesn't seem to be valid for high mileage cars.

    Thanks

The used car appraiser on edmunds.com deducts $1,857 from the price for a 2003 Prius with 120K miles. The calculation seems to be based on an average of 12,000 miles/year. i.e., a 2003 Prius with 120K is worth $1857 less than an identical one with 48,000 miles. Their site give you retail, trade in and private sale prices, might give it a shot.

I don't believe that #. Nobody in their right mind would pay that small of a differential for a high mileage car.

I'd like to hear from real world consumers/sellers re high mileage Prius'.

    Thanks

1800 was about 20% of the price. Sounds right to me.

A web page can only tell you so much, as does what others are buying/selling for. If you are buying the car, make a lower offer if you feel they are asking too much. If you are selling, set your price high as a starting point, and then react to the offers you get.

cars.com shows some Prius's for sale in line with edmunds, a 2003 with 122k for $8995 for example. There's also a 2002 with 106k asking 14 grand. I think one of these is realistic and one is not. A lot of it depends on the car, though, a high mileage car that looks newer and has good tires, complete maintenance records, etc. might bring much more than a car with similar mileage in sadder shape.

    Thanks much for the comments

I'm neither buying or selling a used one. I'm trying to guesstimate the $/mile for a potential new purchase based on 30K miles/year and a 4 year use. I'm estimating a $27K total purchase cost and perhaps a ~~ $11K sale. That works out to about $0.133/mile for depreciation. Assuming no major system failures, the total cost should be close/under $.25/mile. Not too bad for a 07/08 purchase.

FWIW, my last car cost me well under $0.20/mile.................. but that was a phenom car and was still running like new when I sold it (with 330K miles). I have zero expectations that a Prius would go 330K miles........... no offense intended..

Research the Canadian taxi fleets that have been running Prii for years. They rack up 400,000 km without major repairs. Hopefully your car is more durable than you think and mine is as durable as I think. God only kn ows what others will pay for these cars in 4 years. New battery technology may make them as popular as carburated V-8's. Only time will tell.

Oops, I considered buying or selling, but not planning. Good luck with your decision! I don't expect a Prius to do 330K, but you never know. If everyone else thinks they are too complex to keep or otherwise not worth fixing, then there will be lots of cheap parts cars in the future.

LOL............... I like planning much more than spending $. I was originally thinking of perhaps holding off till the PI 09 model. ??? However, it appears to be a buyers market right now on the 07's (sweet prices). I'm betting that won't last long.

    Thanks much for the info

I'm betting you're correct on that one John.. The price of gas will most certainly go up, we're sending more troops to Iraq, global warming, etc..... its just a matter of time. Once gas gets up to the 2.75 or 3.00 per gallon price once again, I'll bet there won't be a Prius on the lot. Americans have a rather short memory which I think accounts for the buyers market right now. We'll see.
