One answer is that when someone applies for replacement stickers, they get a new number--not duplicate stickers with their original number--and it doesn't count as another set in the 85K.

There have also been reports on here of non-eligible vehicles getting cited for having the stickers. Don't know whether those "revoked" stickers are reallocated back into the pool or not though.

Replacement stickers also factor in to the total, and I'm sure the DMV also eliminates certain numbers from being issued (5555,66666,12345, etc.)

When the 75000 ran out, the sticker number was already above 80000. In other words, it's impossible to tell how many stickers are left based on the sticker numbers being issued.

I agree and did call the DMV. They told me that can't (or won't) answer such questions. If somebody has a telephone number they used to get this information, I'd appreciate getting it. As for getting a signature, it's a PO box and both FEDEX and UPS say they can't get a signature when something is sent to a PO box.

I guess I'll just send in another application and hope for the best.

    DMV Phone #: (916) 657-8035

You can get a signature confirmation and tracking info when using USPS, and it only takes a couple of days to get there.

    Good luck!

Totally hosed by MAITA TOYOTA in Sacramento Calif.
I bought the 2007 on Dec. 8th asking for expedited DMV service. I had to explain why I needed plates so quickly etc. First clue.
Called the DMV girl JULIE two weeks later askign where my plate numbers were and tried to explain why I needed the plate numbers asap again. She had gotten the application returned because she had used the wrong address and DMV returned the app. She assured me it would be turned in the following FRIDAY, which it wasn't according to another person who says they only go in once a week on Wednesdays.
Called again this Monday and she is out on two weeks leave. The person who answered said it was in to DMV and was being processed. Called today, getting yet another girl who said that DMV RETURNED THE AP YET AGAIN because my DL number was entered wrong by JULIE and HERE IS THE BEST PART
MAITA Toyota had entered the WRONG BODY TYPE for the car-they put sedan and its a hatchback.
They are blaiming all this on DMV. They only go in to DMV once a week and can't get there until WED>
    kiss those stickers goodbye
So, anyone thinking of getting any kind of service from Maita Toyota can do much better elsewhere.
Everyone I have dealt with there is useless starting with the salesman who lured me in telling me they had a silver car (it had been sold three days prior) and assured me that it was available, ready and waiting.
Guess that should have been my first clue.
    Rant off

Just spoke with the DMV. I was told by a very help lady there, that there were 1244 stickers left in total.

You guys don't need to wait for the license plate to arrive. I sent my application in late November before I received the plates. In the spot where it says LICENSE PLATE #, I left it blank figuring the VIN was good enough. I was right. I received my stickers on Jan 5, #HE08567x. YAHOO! Being in the carpool lane cut off about 20 minutes from the commute.

Been there, done that and got the return from DMV to prove that they no longer accept just the VIN number. I dont know why people can't just go in and do all this themselves and get stickers. But this is Calif where the government is never efficient.
I totally blame Maita Toyota at this point and am thinking that Julie did all of these mistakes out of spite because I called a grand total of three times since Dec. 8th. I did send a message to the salesperson whom I bought from explaining how incompetent Julie was and asked him not to forward to her but she did call the next day to ASSURE me that everything was under control and taken care of.
I won't get the plates now until WED, figure a couple days in the mail to DMV and the 1200 disappear pretty quickly.

Sorry, you had the bad experience. I only submitted the application 2 months ago, so I can't imagine the DMV changed within that time. I was waiting for my plates before sending off the application until my boss told me he didn't wait for the plates and got his stickers with no problems. I did the same and received the stickers. The caveat is that I sent in the application a month before they issued the next round of 10,000 stickers, so they already had my plate in the system. I believe my license plate arrived in the mail about a week after I sent off my HOV sticker application

Hope it works out for you. I bought my Prius through the Costco Auto program ($800 bucks off sticker price!) and they sent me to Thousand Oaks Toyota.

I got my stickers today. Number 87498.
After reading the instructions I realize that nobody put them on their car the same way. Three on the back of the car alone and one on the front is what it says. Most people put one on each corner of the car.
I am still not sure about sticking these ugly things on my car. At least it should be symmetrical. I think I will put the big ones on the rear corners and the little ones on the front corners. I doubt they will ticket for "misunderstanding" the instructions...

When did you send in the application? I sent mine in on Monday -- a week ago -- and I'm feeling pessimistic.

I sent my app a week ago Friday. I have not seen my check get cashed as of yet, but I am not really expecting to just yet. Anyway I spoke to a lady at the DMV on Friday and she had been informed that morning that there were 1244 stickers left!!
So I think that you should be alright. Good luck mate!

Thanks for the info. I gotta say that being down to 1244 stickers is mighty close, particularly given the rate at which new Prii are showing up around Santa Cruz. If feel like the the total number of them has doubled over the past few weeks.

    Crossing my fingers!

I agree with you on this one Hilde... I think Maita is a crappy dealership. The finance guy I worked with is an arrogant, stupid bastard. Talk about not knowing their nice person from a hole in the ground. The fact that a I got a good price on my 2007 Prius is the only reason I went to this dealership. The DMV girl was already out on some sort of diability and my DMV app was not going in for a week. I know that they have a standing appointment with the DMV and any knucklehead can turn in paperwork. Whatever... I only hope I still have a chance.

To make matters worse, isn't it now the case that the dealers just register these cars online, in minutes? I know my plates arrived right away, easily within 2 weeks of the sale and I did not put any pressure on the dealership to hurry at all. It is my own lazy fault that we may not get stickers. I just didn't get around to it on time.

This is not to say that I can't find a lot to complain about at my dealership. Most of it involving the hideous lying finance guy. We were paying cash, so foolishly optimistic that we would get out of there quickly. Write a check and leave, we though. NOT. We had to hear all about all of the extended warranty programs that would take care of us given that "our car is just a computer that no one understands, and when that fails it will be thousands upon thousands of dollars and there won't be a darn thing we can do about it."

We resisted. Perhaps resistance was foolish, but it felt good to watch him shrivel up when we turned him down cold.

1244 stickers left AFTER they processed all of their mail received, 1244 stickers minus the number of unprocessed but received applications? I'm still waiting. Check was cashed on 12/19/06. Licence plates arrived 1/14/07. Car was purchased in late November 2006. REALLY slow getting the plates, but got the number of the plates over the phone prior to applying.
