Hey all, curious if anyone has bought and tried the Chinese no name head gasket kit for 2ZR on eBay for like $50us they include most gaskets and orings required for the whole job Expecting a bunch of naysayers based on price, and yeah I'm sceptical myself but would like to hear from anyone that's actually tried it Cheers Matt Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
I thought I was as cheap as anyone on this forum, but I wouldn't risk my time with parts of unknown quality. Additionally, IME, off brand rubber parts, like seals and gaskets, tend to perform poorly and fail early.
You got to be careful with o-rings and things like that they have to be made out of certain types of material not just rubber and round which can be a thing with some of these places multiple layer head gaskets need to be riveted properly assembled correctly things like that I tend to use either of the Toyota brand they're not that expensive or Fel-Pro I've always used fel pro about 40 some odd years now never had any problems with them at all now in the last 10 years or so I haven't been doing a lot of engine internal work so I don't know what's happened and say the last 10 or 15 years I imagine like everybody things have become somewhat of a mess but they're permanent torque line of head gaskets still seems to be relatively spot-on I've purchased some stuff from them recently I haven't put it into service yet I haven't laying on the bench actually looks pretty decent
I'd go with the Toyota kit listed in the attachment, if you can find it. I've heard with the FelPro alternative (for an example), apart from the head gasket, everyhing else is "this'll do", and it's far less complete. Toyota kit part no: 04111-37315 Buy Genuine Toyota 0411137315 (04111-37315) Gasket Kit, Engine Overhaul. Prices, fast shipping, photos, weight - Amayama
Thanks guys, I have used a genuine Toyota gasket, but would still like to hear feedback from anyone that has used the eBay kit Mendel, why do you choose the Toyota gasket over the felpro? Most here seem to bag the genuine gasket and go with felpro Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
They're all multi-layer metal now they're not really a gasket but anyway like older engines used to use. But now that's how all of them are you know three or five layer metal gasket assemblies riveted peened something. Felpro is always been a high quality gasket maker. A lot of times now for a lot of engines you can get the Toyota gasket on close out because most of the time you're doing this your 10 years into ownership so most of those parts have fallen off and have been sold off the places like Amiyama. And then you're paying fairly reasonable prices. I'm sure Toyota probably doesn't make the gasket they have better things to do It's farmed out like thermostats and other things.
Well I’ve yet to choose neither, hoping it never comes to that. A couple of reasons though: the gasket has been revised I’m not sure the originals were defective, could be either the felpro or original wouldn’t last, with an engine running hot/lean.
Just curious dogman, I used a genuine gasket on mine mainly because its hard to source fel-pro and i did not know what else to trust Almost everything we buy originates from China these days, maybe the head gasket in this kit is brilliant and the rest of the kit not so good Mendel it was the fact the OEM gasket has been revised that made me feel a little more confident to use it although some reports on here are suggesting they also fail prematurely I am considering leaving the egr plug disconnected from the get-go, with a fresh head gasket and all clean egr components / manifold.
It the cheap chinese COPIES that are crap. Some companies expect better quality and better parts are used to build whatever it is. The kit I got was made in Japan.
Due to EGR clogging. I’m with you except for the bold bit, would just maintain the EGR. The half-baked design in 3rd gen requires a full cleaning at least every 50k miles. My sense is Toyota’s engineers are counting on it’s functionality.
Mendel, i always take your thoughts onboard as i know how much research you do. Can I ask why you don't like the idea of disconnecting the erg plug and would rather use a maintained egr, i have been thinking with it disconnected there should be lower temps right at the gasket at all times
Properly functioning EGR supplies measured amounts of (oxygen-depleted) exhaust gas, allowing the engine to run lean without overheating.
Do you have a source for this? As I understand it, EGR on spark-ignited engines has benefits for efficiency and emissions, but the fuel/air ratio doesn't change. "In a gasoline engine, this inert exhaust displaces some amount of combustible charge in the cylinder, effectively reducing the quantity of charge available for combustion without affecting the air-fuel ratio." (wikipedia)
I want to hear more from the people with EGR disconnected but the thread about it went quiet Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
I'm going to vote the party ticket on this one. I just price checked an OEM gasket kit for about $250. Cheap insurance against having to redo a long and tedious job.
Quick question, with the timing chain tensioner gasket should the compression (raised) side face the timing cover? Grit im hearing you, those copied plugs sure do cause trouble hey!
