Question: I purchased my Prius three years ago, but I’m unsure whether the previous owner ever changed the transmission fluid. Should I have it changed?

I’m worried that changing it might cause problems. Do you have any advice or suggestions?

    Thanks.

I changed my Gen 2 transaxle fluid about that time. It didn't cause any problems for me. Realize the eCVT in your Prius works a lot differently than a typical automatic transmission. I did see a video that suggested that you shouldn't change your transmission fluid after a given number of miles, but that was because of the bands, clutches and valve bodies that your Prius doesn't have.

Don't use anything but the Toyota ATF-WS, available at the Toyota Dealer parts department. (This is if you do it yourself, or have it done by somebody else).

It's usually not that hard to DYI it either. If my memory isn't failing me, there's a 10MM allen head plug to remove, which is sometimes hard to get out. Make sure you've got the right plug (there's a similar plug in the eCVT for the coolant). You'll also need to grab a piece of tubing and a funnel (thread the tubing in from the top and use the funnel to get the fluid from the bottle into the tubing).

It shouldn't cause any issues because it's a planetary gear system. As long as you perform the change properly and use the right stuff; you should be fine.

    Good Luck

@Danno5060 @BiomedO1 Thank you so much for your kind replies, I really appreciate your help. I am planning to get it done at a shop.

    Thanks.
