... states something like, "Scientists believe a light-sensitive freckle on a frog was the beginning of what would later evolve into an eyeball."

Whatever the quote actually was, I hope it inspires some to read this impressive essay on evolution of vision:

    https://www.nature.com/articles/eye2017226

    ==
I also want to offer another

    https://journals.biologists.com/dev/article/147/19/dev182923/225925/Evolution-and-development-of-complex-eyes-a#:~:text=Single-chambered%20visual%20organs%2C%20like%20the%20vertebrate%20eye%2C%20have,an%20exacting%20morphology%20to%20enable%20specific%20visual%20functions.

I wish that works like this could be made more widely accessible. But one problem is terminology; those off-putting words that have very lucid meanings.

In biology instruction I regard as dismal, Material as wonderful as these may be presented, but when the exam comes there are questions like "Define plesiomorphy". I mean, DANG.

A goal of science ought to be sharing the wonder and joy that comes from readings such as the above. Memorizing vocabulary lists for exams just snuffs that out.

It is regrettable that so many people get introduced to science by uninspired teaching. Then decide it's not for them.. This system is as contagious as any disease we might discuss here.

I am loath to share this because the source "dodgy":

Given recent changes, I agree we're headed for a brutal Fall respiratory season.

that's a very strange article for epoch, which deals mainly in anti covid conspiracy theorizing.

it will be an interesting fall/winter for those of us with compromised immune systems. a lot of super spreaders will be out and about. (squeezes N-95 nose bridge while typing)

I've been taking 50,000 IU vitamin D3 since 2007. One of the effects I've noticed is that I've only had a two day sickness since then. Certainly a change from before then.

No vaccines in at least 50 years. No covid, Certainly have allergies - control them with lyposomal vitamin C when necessary.

I also take high dose vitamin K2 to control the calcification that the D supposedly causes. Primarily low fat vegan diet. Current experiment with high dose systemic enzymes (Vitalzym) to clear out the fibrin that accumulates with age.

Maybe I'll need more when I get older. I'm 80 now...

I'll be glad to allow the anti-vaxxers to get ahead of the rest of us and provide the materials for analyzing the next batch of vaccines. The one time I got it (omicron variant) was more than enough for my tastes.

One of the most valuable math courses is statistics. Unlike ordinary math of absolutes, statistics helps those who want the truth to measure if something has an effect, good or bad. For example:

The tobacco fraud was measure in medical outcomes. So too are vaccinations and modern medical practices.

I know very few people who are 'anti-vax' and I grew up where Amish and Mennonite communities are common....and neither of these communities are 'anti-vax' in real-world terms.
    HOWEVER....(comma!!!)
Some minority communities, and even norms 'might' be more hesitant to take a just-in-time vaccination for a 'new and improved' disease, or they're......'anti-vax' by MSM standards.

Some communities have a deeper history of being lied to by BOTH their government AND Yuuuge corporations.
    Me?
I used to run into this topic as a drilling reservist, since the military absolutely CAN force you to take a vaccine.....as long as it's not some sketch 'experimental' drug like they forced some people to take in Gulf Wah 1.0.

Every year in January and February we could count on two absolutes:
We would be in the field during the coldest day of the year.
We would be forced to kick somebody out for refusing to take the required annual flu shot.

I treated it as a "go - no go" test for basic intelligence.
You were at least smart enough to get the shot or smart enough to gun-deck the requirement.

"Most" of us that were mandated to get these shots received them. Like in the Military... we had to to keep the job/career. Facts remain though...the shots didn't work and smoking is still bad for you. They didn't mandate smoking though.

Another data point: CDC official in charge of Covid data resigns ahead of vaccine meeting | Robert F Kennedy Jr | The Guardian

The scientist responsible for overseeing the CDC team that collects data on Covid and RSV hospitalizations resigned on Monday.

Dr Fiona Havers told colleagues in an email that she no longer had confidence the data would be used “objectively or evaluated with appropriate scientific rigor to make evidence-based vaccine policy decisions”, according to Reuters.

She resigned before a planned meeting of a new vaccine panel put in place by Robert Kennedy Jr after he fired all 17 members of the CDC’s independent vaccine advisory panel. Kennedy also dropped a recommendation to get the Covid shot for healthy children and pregnant women.

Havers, leader of the Resp-Net hospitalization surveillance team, did not respond to requests for comment.

Her resignation follows moves by Kennedy, the health secretary, to abruptly fire all 17 members of the CDC’s independent vaccine advisory panel and drop a recommendation for administering Covid shots to healthy children and pregnant women.
    . . .

I don't mind if others choose to not get vaccinated. I do object to them standing in the way of those like me who want an effective, science based, vaccine. Perhaps they need to witness, again, saturated hospitals and funeral homes to get a "clue by four."

Hindsight is 20/20. In the end, most will agree heard immunity (different with varying groups) played a big part in folk's resilience to the virus.

... and might even agree that reaching a threshold of herd immunity was importantly accelerated by having vaccines.

Absolutely sure that $cience will argue that very point....and it's a somewhat valid point.
One might also argue that people getting the 'vid accelerated herd immunity.

I got the smallpox vaccine three times.
It's absolutely effective and it absolutely has some fairly significant side effects that have been FULLY documented.
    Including.... (trigger warning!!!!) Myo/pericarditis.
I was required to get them, and I took them.

Science based, crowd sourced, or mob-ruled?

Legitimate questions follow because...."facts seem to vary....."

    1. ....recommendation for administering Covid shots to healthy children and pregnant women...
What are these 'recommendations' in the EU? The UK? BRICS? or Oz?
One of (few) advantages of government run (rationed) health care is that $cience tends to focus on results rather than political affiliation.

    2. Her resignation follows moves by Kennedy, the health secretary, to abruptly fire all 17 members of the CDC’s independent vaccine advisory panel
    Who hired the 17?
    (No...not WHO, but Whom?)

A friend is battling (successfully, so far) Stage 3 colorectal cancer, and during the horrible radiation and chemo treatment his immune system was somewhat less effective at battling the 'vid.
His bride has a previously used organ so she's also somewhat immunologically challenged.

Increased Covid susceptibility may be what they are trying to warn about.
